4 weeks left of summer league and a question
« on: July 14, 2006, 03:06:19 PM »
My summer league is 4 weeks away from finishing up.  I bowled Wednesday as usual.  The team we were up against had two players and their anchor was absent (the league is trios).  We barely won the first game, by 5 pins.  The absent anchor was listed at 235 on the sheet, so his absent score is -10 (225).

The second game comes and goes and we got crushed.  The shot started to go away for everyone on our pair, and once we knew the game was out of reach my team's anchor says: "You know what?  With their absent guy at 225, if you take my absent average of 215 the last game we may have a shot at winning."  I said "HUH?"  After the second game, he feigned an emergency, put on his shoes and LEFT!

We did lose the third game (it was two vs. two with both anchors absent).  I think the real reason we lost is more so because the sub on the other team (a woman with a 150ish average) shot a low 500 set.  She was happy because she bowled well, and we had fun high-fiving and enjoying the evening as it was.

Would you believe I got paged at the center just as the last game ended?  It was my team's anchor, calling to find out of we won the last game.

So... if you got this far (this is a long post for me...lol), my question for you is this:  With 4 weeks left of league, would you even bother to speak to your teammate when he comes in to bowl next week?  My teammate who stayed to finish out his 3 games was so upset over our anchor's disappearance after game 2 that when we finished, he packed up and practically flew out of the center.  We usually walk out together, but he set a land speed record leaving the building, and I know he was pretty mad about the anchor bailing on us.

Discuss!

I agree, it depends on how well you know the person.  If it is a close friend, I would talk to him and let him know it was not cool and the effect it had on both of you.

If it is a casual acquaintance, I would let it slide.  Finish the league and move on.  I would talk to the other bowler who did stay and let him know your feelings on the subject.  He may have thought you were in on it and approved the actions of the third member.

I must admit there have been nights I have been so off my game, I was tempted to leave and let my team get my absent score.  I never did leave.  I only have quit when I truly was ill, and that's only been once in 28 years.  I went to urgent care and had extremely low blood pressure.  They nrver did find the cause and it has never happened again.

He's a quitter a DNFer

Plain and simple.  And you don't need quitters on your team for any reason.  Sadly we see this happen pretty frequently and its usually by the same person/s.

So like the rest of the responses, I'd finish the season out because that's the commitment you made and then don't bowl with him again.

As mad as it may make you that he walked out, I'm not sure what you would accomplish by confronting him about it.  I would just finish the season, still try to have fun and just show your quiet discontent by never bowling with him again.

Thanks for the replies, everyone... I was just curious about what others thought.

We picked this guy up after our original third teammate opted to bowl a sport league this year (the sport league he's on is at another house and used to floor on Mondays, but they moved it to Wednesday to do a parent/child sport league).

I'm going to keep talking to the guy, since he IS my teammate, for now.  Part of me thinks what he did was incredibly childish (the lanes aren't perfect, so I'm gonna take my ball and go home) and part of me is shocked because he actually called the house and paged me to see if we won.  I thought that was really odd.

Anyway, I do plan to finish the league and hopefully find a new teammie next season.
