I just received my first ring.  What is the proper etiquette in wearing a ring when bowling?

Do you wear them? Don't wear them bowling?  what do you do?

I have a couple rings that I wear on occasion (but never both at once), but for the most part they sit on a shelf at home.  When I finally knock down that 800 series, I will probably wear that ring for a good while before putting it on the shelf with the others.

They're nice and all, but I think people who wear them all the time are looking for attention or exhibiting an amount of pride which can be, IMO, unhealthy.

I think wearing your award bowling ring has more to do with the respectability of the honor score than anything else. In the 70's if you have a 300 you were 1 of <1000. In 2007 there were ~52,000 300 games. Of course in the 70's there were 5 times as many members bowling 2 times as many leauges.

The point is respect. I dont think that a 300 game today garners the same respect and bragging rights. Even if a single bowler has respect for thier 300 game the other bowlers dont and so why bother wearing it. It used to be you wanted to show off the 300 game ring. Now there is no one to show it to.

I can give you a good 300 ring story. The first time I bowled in USBC's (it was the ABC's then) was in Mobile in 1994. Me and my buddy went over to bowl in the Bowlers Journal (satelite event at nationals location each year in conjunction with tournament). We get paired up with a guy who has a 300 ring on every finger except for his thumb on both hands.

To make a long story short, he had to mark in the 9th and 10th of game three to squeeze out 400 for the 3 game set.

Since that day, I do not wear my award scores rings out in public because of the gigantic bullseye it puts on your back when you bowl.

I should be getting my 3rd ring soon, this one I rolled with a fractured shin bone and didn't know it until I got the MRI results the day after surprisingly enough. I never wear the rings then again I don't wear any jewelry not even a watch. They are just nice keepsakes from a good night of bowling. Just because I don't wear them doesn't mean I don't want more.
