How do you work on accuracy?
« on: February 24, 2010, 04:19:15 AM »
How do you guys work on accuracy in practice? Throw a piece of tape on your mark and look to hit it every time? Place a piece of tape down the lane at your breakpoint and try and hit that?? Something else? Lets here how you work on accuracy.

we used to use orange cones, place two about ten boards apart from each other and go through them.. when you can do this consistantly move them closer together or farther down lane.. we also would add another cone down lane when praticing swinging the ball.. somethimes you have to stager(diagonal) the cones.. we also played a game when working on spares.. he/she who had the lowest score without throwing it in the gutter won.. using full racks try to take off the leasty amount of pins.. 1 pin was 1 point and so on, gutters cost you 10 pointss..lol..

I like the cones idea! Only problem I see is it would be very easy to cause some pandemonium!

Proper timing and mechanics SHOULD produce accuracy.  Perhaps some concentration drills.

+1 here.

I was thinking the same thing.

I totally agree, but it is pretty common for people to try and see how accurate the are... just wanted to see how everyone practiced in that aspect

The cone idea is great...except when you miss and they go flying 4 lanes over.

A friend in college made something out of PVC.  A post in each gutter, then a length-wise bar connecting them.  He hung a piece of fabric that could be moved over whatever target you wanted.  If you hit the fabric, you knew you hit your target.

For me, I just concentrate, concentrate, concentrate.  Focus on my target and don't move my eyes until I see the ball going over it.

What kind of concentration drills, is there a link or post to this. I find that in practice I can hit targets just fine but when the lights come on.. Its like I throw 3 good shots then a bad one or miss a spare and the games out the window. Its all mental as I am lights out when pot bowling or in practice. Any help would be appreciated.. don't mean to post jack! Can't you tell frustration has set in... haha

In my club, the youth coach built a kind of "gate" with a free swinging target hanging from it for aiming training.

This gate is as wide as the lane, and the target hangs just low enough that a ball passing under it withing 1 or 2 boards will hit the pendulum. This pendulum can be shifted across the gate construction from 1st to 39th board, and it is stable neough that the pundulum stays in its position/target board after a hit.

The thing gets frequent use in youth training, and is very effective for hitting your mark at the arrows, and it can also be used for break point training.

Beyond that, I am with agroves: proper execution and ability for repetition creates accuracy. Things run smooth when you do not HAVE to aim or force things. Repetition and routine are powerful weapons in bowling, so concentration, motivation and dedication are IMHO very important issues here, too. Not hitting the target can easily create frustration...

The pro shop in my closest center has something built for the same purpose as the youth coach dizzy mentioned.  It has a target that you can move side to side so you can put it where you want.

I'm with dizzy and others.  Except for just confirmation that you can actually hit what you want, I don't think things like that actually improve your accuracy unless maybe if you aim a lot and/or are just a feel player.  Accuracy should be determined by your overall mechanics, particularly timing, swing, and body position.
