Good, but in a bad way
« on: August 23, 2004, 04:14:44 AM »
Sunday night (yesterday) was our first night of the fall sunday league.  My teammates and I are really great friends, so we decide to go to their house to have a little fun several hours before league starts.  Our fun for the day was shooting shotguns and rifles at a local range.  Had a blast, but bruised my right shoulder pretty good and so did the other male member on my team.  Got to bowling and was in pretty good pain just lifting the ball into my stance.  What happens next suprised the crap out of me.  I bowled a 201-204-215 for a 620 series.  This is pretty good for me because my avg. is 175, but the bad thing is that we have 9 games total to set a new average.  I honestly was just trying to maintain my average, not bowl that well.  The only up-side to this is it would be nice to at least say I average 200 and would be even greater if I can maintain that average.

average control = sandbagging.  If you are deliberately not trying to do your best, then you are sandbagging.

Agree with Ranting.  Anytime you even think about bowling bad to preserve your average, you are a sandbagger.  It's good you set your average high.  Now try your best to maintain it.  So what if you cannot! Keep your league sheet, and show off to people who don't know you that you are a 200 bowler

Last season, I started with a 617 series for a 205 average.  I was able to keep it for a month, longer than I thought possible.  I eventually dropped back down to my previous level, before surging up to 196.  Enjoy the high average and have fun trying to maintain such a high level.  Then try to get back there.  You did it once, you can do it again

Personally, I think you guys are overreacting by thinking he was intending to sandbag.  As a 175 avg. bowler, he is probably just not confident in being able to keep that high an average.  I read it that he didn't expect to do that well, and that initially he would have been happy to just be close to his average.  He was just surprised to shoot that well given the previous activities of the day, that's all.

Also, reread this part.  He does not get the 200 average unless he can do it for 6 more games (the downside being he will not be shown to have a 200 avg. unless he does so) He also states it would be great if he could maintain the avg.  I don't think sandbagging was ever thought of in this case.

If he was intending to sandbag, he surely had the opportunity to do so, but obviously chose not to.

Good shooting Rabbit Sla - hope you can keep it up there for the whole year!

I didn't say that he was intentionally sabdbagging, but anytime you admit to trying to "maintain your average", the implication is that you were not trying do to the best you could.  To me, anytime that you intentionally bowl below your abilities, your are sandbagging.

I wouldn't say he was sandbagging...he just had no expectations of bowling that well.  So for now you're a 200 average bowler, but you are a true 200+ average bowler if you can maintain that for the entire season and remain consistent.  I won't lie, I have done some sandbagging in my day as well.  In my home bowling center, you're basically screwed if you have no handicap.  At the beginning of the season, I was averaging right around 230 and it felt good, but in the Trios league that I was in, we would lose game after game because of not having any handicap.  I let my average drop down a bit and lo and behold we were winning games.  If I had maintained an average around 230, I would have needed to shoot close to 750 or so every night in order for our team to win anything at all the way things were.  I don't believe in sandbagging at all, but it wasn't a very competitive league and it didn't cost the team anything.  If it's for something competitive, go in every week with your head held high and bowl the best you possibly can.

Many of my best nights have come when injured or sick. The bottom line is sometimes all you have to do it lets the bowling happen and react to what you see and not try to be so critical and analyze everything. Distracting your mind can have great results.

Maintaining my average vs. scoring low, hmm i would take maintaining my average.  I bowled on a summer league and had a very hard time reaching my average.  That is why i wanted to maintain my average.  Sandbagging is for the losers.  I had no intention of sandbagging.  I just did not know i would shoot that high.  I for one do not believe in sandbagging.  Yes, when i said honestly was just trying to maintain my average, it was because of my very sore shoulder.

Ok, now that I am done with the speech, yes I will try very hard to hit that average.  If i shoot lower, so be it.  Sometimes you have games that are a fluke, but if i can stay at that level then it was not a fluke.

p.s.  thanks to all the people that said I was not a sandbagger   (9~)
