I am a newbie. Started during the summer now with an average of 140-145. I have a Storm Thunderstruck and a tropical.. I am wondering what's the different between hook and roll? And what kind of pin placement and top weight will allow me to drill a ball with a strong backend power? My thunderstruck does pretty good but my dad's SD73 sucks big time.....

Without seeing you bowl or at least your PAP measure it is hard to make a recommendation.
I think you want to know the difference between a rather arcing/rolling ball or a ball which shows a sharper break point. You can tune this mostly through the surface prep of a ball, and the drilling layout will help with the reaction, too. Generally, sanded balls will tend to arc and hook evenly. Polished balls skip in the oiled front part of the lane and react more violently and sharper when they encounter friction. This basically goes for solid or pearl balls, while solds tend to be more even than pearl balls.
With the pin placement you can also influence the reaction - placing the pin close to your grip center (generally under the fingers) will make the ball hook earlier, smoother, arcing. Putting the pin higher above the fingers will add length. Combined with a polished surface, this results in a rather flippy layout. The pin distance from the PAP will define how strong the overall reaction of the ball will be - and here you should seek out assistance from a pro shop to set the ball up for your needs and style.
A quite comprehensive overview on ball drilling basics can be found here:

Just remember that ball reaction is mostly achieved through the proper surface preparation - about 70% can be tuned through this even after drilling up the ball.
If the SD-73 (a very strong ball) sucks, it might be that it is simply too much ball or drilled too strong for the lane condition at hand, loses too much energy before it hits the pins and simply is ineffective. Polishing it might make it more useable, from your descriptions given above.
Hope this helps a bit.
