Roller Coaster ride - Let me off
« on: November 08, 2012, 12:13:20 PM »
Been on a serious roller coaster ride.
Last Tue-707.
Fri-540
Sat-681/652
Sun-550
Tue-737
How do I get off this Roller Coaster?  FYI Yearbook 214, current 222 and 231 Avg
I know it is concentration, but Jeez.  I used to be very consistent, shooting within 30 pins either way of my average.  Now 5 single pins will be the difference between a 230 and a 190.  Fall off real bad when I go fishing for the extra pin carry.
Just ranting.....Sorry

Been there, throw two nice 200 games in 5 of the last 6 league nights the 3rd game can't break 160.
Make average in spite of the low game.
Hoping that trend is gone after Tuesday nights 194, 278, 258 730 series.

I recently had the same problem and out of frustration began to keep track of my leaves and misses.  In today's strike-a-thon bowling environment one tends to forget spares...I'm guilty as well.

Over the course of the following week I found that I was getting into trouble in the early frames of the second game, then missing single pin spares (which compounded my problem) causing me to make moves to find carry so I wouldn't have to shoot single pin spares...most of the moves were incorrect as the information I was giving myself was not correct.  I spent the better part of that week spending my practice time on spare shooting only...targets and angles and repetition.  The following week my goal was not to shoot big games or a big set or even to shoot my average, it was to shoot a clean set.

I had one open in my first set, two in my second (both were 7-10s, but I covered the 7 pin in the fill on both), and my third and 4th sets were clean....weekly goal met.  I reviewed the scores for the week and interestingly enough I was within 10 pins of my average in set 1, 23 over in set 2, and 40+ over in sets 3 and 4 (3 game series average).  Since then I am off the roller coaster....staying within 20 on the low side and letting it run on the high side....with my main goal to take what the lanes give me and stay clean....thus the old addage....."Aim Small....Miss Small."

I would, but the sad truth is we have won the league the last two years on Friday, and finished in the middle of the pack on Tuesdays. :(

I had the same problem yet again last night. 209-165-213. My timing and release were perfect but my ball reaction and carry was awful.....AGAIN. I'm having a good old-fashioned practice session tomorrow morning. my last four matches are:

209-165-213-587
187-244-190-621
246-190-221-657
163-202-210-575

It just seems that no matter how much I try to adjust the worse off I end up. It really sucks because the guys I used to be able to compete with are throwing 740+ every week now and I am not even close to where I once was in regards to average. I have that one game at a time mentality right now and even that doesnt seem to be working.

I would approach this like a coach.  The way I see this is your Tuesday average is probably closer to your true average than any of the other days.  Here is why, and this is all speculation for the sake of internet fodder:

My assumptions:
1.  Work Monday through Friday, 9-5 type job.
2.  Have a desire to improve.
3.  After previous topic replies, dmonroe814 may not be as much a spring chicken as others or as he/she used to be.

Analysis:
1.  Tuesday you are somewhat well rested and work has yet to really bear down on you for the week.  You have energy and so does your body including legs.  You bowl with an attentive mind and rested body and bowl well.

2.  Friday's are the end of the week and can be extremely taxing on the mind.  The time spent at the bowling center is more a getaway from work than it is fun with friends with friendly competition.  Body may be a little less rested from a week of a shorter sleep schedule and the legs show it.  Scores suffer accordingly.

3.  Saturday starts and you finally get some rest.  Depending on the time you bowl, you may have had a busy day of "honey-dos".  Or a fun day watching a sports team do well or bad.  Body feels better than the day before and your scores show this.  Mind is probably feeling better also.

4.  Sunday is the end of the weekend and by now you have completed a list of 237 honey-dos and mowed the lawn and washed the car.  (maybe not)  But much like some people need a vacation from vacation, you too need some extra rest from a busy weekend.  Body is feeling it also and thus scores show it also.

5.  Back to Tuesday with at least one night (Monday) to rest the body.  Already know you bowl well on Tuesday's so your mind is in a better place and so is your body.  Good bowling is achieved.

I know a lot of this is intended as speculation, but there is a message here.  There are a lot of factors that go into the way a person bowls/performs.  It can range from mental, physical, emotional or whatever.  Volatile personalities will usually perform inconsistently.  They can have amazing nights and horrific nights.  This is why most professional athletes try to maintain as even a keel as possible.  Don't get too excited when the good happens and don't get too down when the bad happens. This way, your performance is more true to your preparation and talent.

Try to approach your bowling in a more process oriented manner.  Execute the single shot in front of you and that is all.  Be confident in your decision on any particular shot and take the result as information only.  Don't let a pocket 7-10 tell you how bad a bowler you are or how crappy the carry is.  Let it tell you what you need to do to improve the outcome of the next shot.  And once you step up for the next shot, the past shots are only information, not an indication of what you will do.

PS.  I don't mean this analysis to be true for dmonroe.  I just used it as a basis of my conclusion.
