Rolling over the thumbhole
« on: February 25, 2004, 09:36:12 PM »
I have been a 215 average bowler for the past 3 or 4 years. I have been using a Storm El Niño X-It for the past 3 years. About 8 weeks ago I started rolling the ball over the thumbhole!!! Usually it catches just the lower left corner but at times it will roll over about a third of the hole. I have asked my team mates if it looks like I am doing something different. They all say no. Needless to say that my pin action has dropped although my average is hanging in there.
Anybody have any ideas what I can do. I cannot shake this at all. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not positive, but I thought clipping the thumbhole was caused by turning your hand too early in the release.  Overturning or topping the ball.

No, clipping the thumbhole is the result of staying straighter up the back of the ball.  Rotate your hand a little more as you release and you should stop clipping it.  (Note - if this wasn't an old ball you've used for years without clipping the hole we'd have to look at fit and layout.  Your hand hasn't changed significantly recently has it?  Perhaps you've gained some weight and are having to stay behind the ball to get out cleanly?)  --  JohnP

Thanks for the responses. I haven't had any physical changes in the past two months. No weight gain or changes to my hand. Its getting a little frustrating. I was always a high roller but the track would be about 1/4" to 1/2" to the left of the thumb hole. All of a sudden this starts happening. I did have someone tell me that my center of mass marker was on the left side of the thumb hole and it should be towards the right side. But, again, this ball was okay for 3 years. I guess it is in my release but anything I try now seems awkward and forced.

jmaninpgh -- Don't worry about the location of the cg marker, it is a very small part of the total layout.  The most important thing is the pin location.  Unless the pin is on the negative side of the ball the flare should not carry the track into the thumb hole (perhaps into the finger holes, but that's not your problem).  --  JohnP
