What can cause your PAP to change?

I finally went in today to get my PAP rechecked as I haven't been happy with my ball reactions lately and I had already tried some different surfaces without any results really.

My previous PAP was 5 1/2 > 1/2 ^

after the recheck today, it is 4 1/2 > 1/2 ^

If you track high but it has a small diameter you can get to 6 1/2, but it isn't very common or likely if it now measures 4 1/2.

Most likely they were measured on different balls and somebody missed some oil rings on the 6 1/2 measurement.

Interesting for your horizontal to change that much and your vertical to stay the same . . and the very simple yet very complicated answer is that your release has changed.  Might get a video camera out and see if you can identify specifics.

I know my release has changed obviously... I'm just trying to figure out what caused the change.

 Previously, I was a lower rev player with ball speed around 15 mph. Since May of this year, my ball speed increased to around 16.5 during the summer and my rev rate had increased slightly. Since Fall Leagues have started my ball speed has increased up to 17.5 and I have a hard time even trying to get under 17. I guess I'm just having a hard time putting everything together. I mean I've even thrown 3 300s between June and October, multiple 730+ series from May-August, and now I've just been struggling nonstop since my 300 on 10/9. Thats why I finally decided to get my PAP checked as surface changes really did nothing.

Yeah, it's really complicated to diagnose exactly what's up sometimes . . but I would say that the speed AND rev increase may be exaggerating some things in your swing that are creating an imbalance.  You could be corkscrewing your wrist too.  Instead of your hand going around the outside of the ball, you could be angling your wrist or rotating it instead of keeping it straight.  I'd give that a look and then go from there.

Was either of the PAP determinations confirmed by placing a piece of white tape on the location and throwing the ball to observe that the tape is stationary off the hand (someone will have to watch it for you)?  I've checked a lot of them, and more times than not I've had to adjust the location because the first oil ring or two didn't show up on the ball.  When the tape is stationary you know you've got it right.  --  JohnP

Yes, both times I had it checked had to use a piece of tape. When we placed it at 4 1/2 > 1/2 ^ yesterday it was spot on, saw the ball rolling on the axis and flare downlane
