Back into bowling after 6 years
« on: June 30, 2010, 12:03:13 PM »
Well here is my vague question. I haven't bowled for about 6 years and and had a 180 average, I have an Ebonie Apex ball and would like to buy something new. I have read alot about the Brunswick c 4.5 and the new 900 Global Bank coming out. I play left of center and throw to about the 5 board. My speed in between 16.5 and 18 mph. I tried for fist time on the lanes in my area and found how things have changed. I think the way the oil is at this house I need a ball that works well in the backend of the lanes. Any help would be great. Thanks

The Apex was considered a fairly strong ball back in the early 2000's, so I'm imagining you'd want something that can handle a fair bit of oil.  The C-(System) v4.5 is strong in back, but it does need some friction to turn it.

If you're looking at Brunswick pieces, I'd suggest taking a look at the C-(System) 3.5, as it will navigate the oil better but still have some pop in back.  Another option would be the Diamondback, if you want a reaction that is smoother at the break.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your bowling.

Here's some Jigsaw Corner,Anaconda,Reign of Fire,Plague,Raw Hammer Jacked,Mega Recovery,Complete Bedlam,Pure Physics,Mutant Cell Pearl,920T,Invasion,Diamondback.This is what I came up with.
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

If 900Global is on your list. Might start with the Break Out nice ball, responds well to surface changes and plenty of hook. Mid priced as well.

I just started back after 5 years and that was the first thing i noticed also, the oil..  I would say give yourself some time before getting a new ball and once you have adjusted your style to the new stuff you might not need another ball after all..

Good luck

I'd double that, in spades, BrentwoodBob, considering you had a 180 average. That's not meant to be insulting, just practical. I'd suggest getting a midline strongish ball with a symmetric core and a plastic/polyester one for spares. Most of those balls recommended are asymmetric cores and they take not only a lot of precision to drill, they also require a consistency that a 180 average bowler, in general does not have.

Be smart and work your way up to such a ball, but build your game back up. There are many excellent symmetric cored balls, some of them very strong in the backend, like the new Brunswick Revolver. There are a ton of excellent midrange solids and pearls that are strong but not fussy to drill or to use:
Brunswick Anaconda, 900Global Favorite, Hammer Grind  & Onyx Vibe, Ebonite GamePlan, Columbia Burst, Rot-Grip Nomad Solid, Track 505T and 505C, Visionary Ogre Solid & Gladiator SOlid, among others.

OP:  What if you tried something mid-level, as i'm assuming you'll be on a Typical House Shot, and there will be dry boards outside.  Try something for true mediums, and put a control layout on it.  Get your timing back with that, then grab something for more hook.  The biggest fear i'd have for you would be getting a piece that hooks to early and doesnt wanna get downlane.  Too much ball too early might produce some issues........

I would go to your nearest pro shop and ask the PSG (pro shop guy) to take a look at your game.  It will be more better if your PSG is also an USBC coach.

You PSG can make suggestions on what ball would be the best for you for recreational or league play.

I would agree with going with a mid-price ball.  Don't think of a mid-price ball as a bad thing.  In fact, many of us experienced bowlers have more success with "low-end" equipment because they simply match up better on today's conditions.  The Columbia Freeze is still one of my favorites and may satisfy your craving for backend reaction.  I've seen a ton of people use the Reign to much success with the even bigger backend.
You may be surprised to find that these "high-end" balls might not make it back from where you are used to playing because they simply burn up too quickly and have no energy left for the backend.  In fact, that may even be your issue with the Apex.  In other words, these balls are too strong and have rolled out, which looks like the ball doesn't hook.  I haven't seen you throw the ball obviously, but that is something to think about.
More expensive is not necessarily better...

Thanks again guys. I went out today and bowled 5 games with my Apex and rolled a 992. The pro hasn't had time to watch me yet but he will next time.

Get a Storm Reign, good length, and good backend, and its cheaper than the high end balls out there, but just as good as the high end balls.

I feel your pain, I hadn't bowled in 20+ years, and just got back into it in the last 2 years. And when I went looking for a new ball, and showed what I had, the pro shop guy laughed(in hind sight should have kept the old ball for a spare ball)
I started out with a Roto Grip Pluto, to refind my game and have now gotten into a AZO Pro Tactics, which has a much stronger break for me.
But I am thinking about the next new purchase, and am thinking about having a lesson or two, just to get me to the next level.
Currently averaging about the same as you are.
I am also being lead toward the Reign.
Good luck to you.
