Ron Clifton Video Review
« on: March 06, 2004, 02:59:02 AM »
I don't know if anyone else had posted yet of their involvement in the test guinea pig video coaching.

I had sent a tape to Ron Clifton awhile back for his assessment of my bowling technique.  He requested that I send several views of me throwing the ball from different angles. Side view, full rear view and a close up of hand position at release.

It took Ron awhile before he sent back a tape with his assessment.  What was returned to me was my original tape along with another tape that he personally edited.  The video tape was put together quite well for a first run try and only expect that future productions would be much better.  On that tape was Ron sitting next to a large screen TV playing back my video and he pointed out some of my swing flaws.  Ron started by explaining not just why he felt there were some things wrong but also what some of these flaws cause later on in the swing.  He also reviewed the mistakes and what I would need to do to make the corrections.  Ron continued to later have another bowler (Andy) demonstrate how to make the corrections while Ron was describing what Andy was trying to accomplish.

It appears that the video segments on corrections are from another video that he probably has in production and they were cut and pasted into the video he sent back to me.

Overall my feeling is that he has a good eye at finding flaws and that he spent some time reviewing the tape to make a good assessment. Very good explanation and review of what would be the most beneficial fixes to my swing to become a  better bowler.

If you are unable to find a quality coach in your area and you have access to a video camera and willing to work on making subtle changes to become a better bowler then this may be well worth looking into.

Now for my critiques on the coaching lesson.  I must say you get what you pay for and since this was for free I am not going to complain.  I also know that this is a beginning for Ron and so I won't be too brutal.  In defense of this I think Ron was thinking about charging $40.00 per tape and I feel that it is well worth the money spent no matter what I am about to say.

These are my opinions and I post them so that Ron can see them and so others who are reading this post can as well and then make their decisions based on my findings.  Since this was a first production run I believe Ron has already made changes or may be thinking about these changes for the future.  I think that he does a great job of explaining in an easily stood manner.  He provides good visual images that you can see and compare.  He also does a recap so you shouldn't have to keep rewinding.  The video tape is very personal and not just a slap it together and here you go that so many others have done.  I think the video production could be stepped up without too much cost by using a well lit room.  First part of the video is a little dark for my taste.  It would be nice to see Ron initially dress the part in casual slacks and a polo shirt versus t-shirt. A little too casual.  Some may not take it as serious when first popping in the tape.  He does change clothes in the second part and it is an improvement.  Quiet the background noise.  I know it's a bowling center and you can hear pins crashing in the background but when you are speaking it is a bit of a distraction.  Otherwise much better environment during the last part of the production.

Have a closing statement and also include your phone number and maybe some footage of your Magic Carpet to do some marketing.

So what you are probably wondering if his advice helped me out.  I am practicing his techniques nearly every day and it has helped me become a little more consistent.  I have made a number of changes to my equipment and will continue to work on these techniques over the next few months.

Overall I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to improve their game.

I'm afraid to send Ron a tape of my bowling because I know that after he watched it one time, he would laugh so hard that he would fall out of his chair and hurt himself.

Thank you for your critique Doc. You hit on everything I was thinking myself. The video I did for you was like a rough draft of what I have in mind. I can easily step up the professionalism of the production but I have to buy a little more equipment. Things like proper lighting and a wireless microphone system should do wonders. It is pretty tricky to light the scene of me in front of the big monitor without washing out the TV screen but I think I can do it now.  My biggest concern was the meat and potatoes of the video lesson. I can do some pretty amazing things with a bowler if I am there with them but my concern was just how much I could help the bowler in a video format.
The editing and dubbing is very time consuming but I hope to get much faster as I learn quicker techniques and become more familiar with the software.  If I charged by the hour for these first tapes they would cost $500 each. LOL
I still have two videos to do and they should go out this coming week.
Thank you very much for helping me out with this project. I really hope you make it to the gathering so I can work with you in person. That way you can compare the two experiences for me and help me decide of this is worth the time, effort and money for all involved.

Brickguy - A good coach like Ron wouldn't laugh at you on tape.  He takes the coaching really personal so I think he would only laugh in the presence of no one.

Ron - I Hope that all goes well.  I know what it is like to to take on a big project.  I am in the beginning stages of storyboarding a video tape series myself and looking at all the things that go into a quality run production.

I hope to hear from all the other guinea pigs out there and their results.

For those out there that are reading this and thinking about lessons contact Ron and I am sure he will help you out.
