POPPP!
« on: July 24, 2009, 12:07:52 AM »
Home by myself last night and heard that loud POP again. Hadn't heard it for a while .. but it was a familiar sound! First I looked to see if something was knocked over by one of my two cats. Seeing both in their beds I went straight to my home office where my bowling balls are stored!

With so many balls around it was tough to see if there was damage. Past experience made me investigate one particular manufacturer. Found nothing. Now I start thinking the noise was something else.

This morning I take a closer look at some of the balls sitting on the floor. There is was ..a small crack on a a ball I haven't used in at least a year. One of the few USED balls I have (think I have one other). Crack was between the newly drilled finger and the filler for the old hole!

This is the fourth time I remember hearing that POPPING sound .. it's very distinctive. First time I heard it .. thought pipes burst in my walls. Went around trying all my faucets. The more I hear it the more familiar I become with it.

Read where a lot say cracking comes from DROPPING or COLD/HEAT .. I don't doubt that it's true .. however .. all of my bowling balls cracked sitting on a shelf. This is the first one that was a USED ball(i.e., re-drilled) all of the others (six) were balls I had drilled when new. It happened at varying times .. some were six months others were two years.

I have no complaints about the manufacturers .. all of the 1st drill balls were replaced.

My whole point is the CRACKING SOUND .. hope none of you become familiar with it!

The core mass in today's bowling balls are heavier & larger which puts more pressure on the less dense
cover of the ball.If the ball stays in one  place without being moved the mass & weight put pressure
on the cover thus weakening it .The ball must be shifted at least 1/4 rotation at least one time per
month.I had this problem for years with every manufacturer, the balls  were always in rooms in my house
the had perfect climate control.I could not figure out why this keep happening.I finally called and
spoke to two ball companies, booth companies Storm & Ebonite got back to me within a week with this same information.Since they told me this 5 years ago I have not had one ball crack on me.

That's very interesting information .. and I must admit .. The FIRST TIME I've heard that. I may have been doing this (without knowing it) via my cleaning schedule! HOWEVER .. it is possible I missed some balls and they are the ones that cracked ..you can bet I'll be more attentive in the future .. Thanks for the info!

You are welcome Mr.Falco .It was in the balls that sat unused for long periods of time. Thanks to the two ball companies for being nice enough to actually get back with the information.

I'm not sure about this.

I keep both drilled and undrilled ball in my basement over a period of about 13 years now. I never rotate them. I keep some on a rug in front a shelf. These are in regular rotation of use. I keep the others in their original plastic bag in their original box on the shelves. The bags are not sealed and the basement in on the humid side, 50-65% humidity all year long. I've had only 2 balls crack on me: one 10 years ago and one about 2 years ago.

Over 43 years of bowling, I have probably had 15-20 balls crack! I have actually had brand new, undrilled balls crack all the way around the ball, sitting in a ball holder on a display!!! So much for glue or hole too close to pin! Also , temperature or humidity was not a factor. I think the new, very thin veneers are worse than ever about cracking. Rarely see a Legend's or Visionary ball crack. I think it's because the shells are so much thicker.

I think it's obvious that there are several reasons why a ball CAN crack. Some last forever, even through abuse, while others don't. There is even some inconsistency among the exact same model.

We can sum it up with one word: youneverknow!

Darn! and we were getting so close to the definitive answer.

Sorry, Joe. Actually the manufacturers have pegged you for their victim of the decade. Either that or don't buy any lottery tickets, ever!
