Foul lights and buzzers, does your center's work
« on: November 21, 2003, 12:10:53 AM »
Just taking a poll to see how many of your bowling centers have properly working foul lights.  When a foul is committed the light should come on and a buzzer should sound.  The other night the scorer marked a foul and no one noticed if a foul was committed.  When asked the bowler said he didn't think he did.  Turned out the lights work but the buzzer didn't.  Anyway, another bowler on his team said he didn't foul and the frame counted.  We lost game by 4 pins.
If the buzzer had sounded everyone's attention would have noticed if he had or not.  I bowl in one center where they don't even turn them on.  I don't know what the ABC rules are about this subject, but I think they should be required and in perfect operating condition.  Is it that expensive to fix and maintain them?

Bones, was that your business card I saw taped down by the foul line after I fell?

Did anyone ever notice that on the commercial for Dexter shoes on the PBA telecast it looks like David Ozio fouls on the lane to the left of the one he is bowling on?  He swings his trailing leg around so far that it looks like the toe of his shoe on the trailing leg crosses the foul line on the lane to his left.  It looks like that trailing foot is on the floor, but the shot is from overhead so it's hard to tell.  It's only on screen for a split second.  It's strange that they wouldn't catch something questionable like that in the editing process.

Charlest, I don't know if I should take offense to your reply, but i won't.

Please don't be. It wasn't intended to be insulting; it was intended to summarize and simplify the rule.

I stated that the buzzer did not work, and escaped attention until it was noticed on the score display.  You are right we took his word.  The purpose of this post is not about that.  It is obvious that many centers fail to either turn the foul lights on and most are not maintained, as stated by others in this forum.  ... I bowl in an ABC sanctioned league, and pay dues so I think the lights should work properly and be turned on to verify the foul rule is enforced.

Unfortunately, to be as realistic as possible, your paying ABC dues has nothing to do with whether or not the proprietor or manager sees fit to maintain the foul line lights and buzzers. That is always a convenience offered by our automated society. If you know it's off, members of both teams have to follow the rules of courtesy or one person has to be the "eagle eye". I think this reduces the fun and the joy of bowling. You have to decide what you will accept as a foul line rule. The league can certainly get together with center management IF this issue is of equal concern to all or most other members.

AS to whether all my centers have working lights, only one of the older houses has problems and they are rare. If one lane is giving us problems, we have the desk shut them off. Then we mostly ignore them as people rarely foul.

I'll hand it to our AMF Center. The foul lights do work. The bad news is once they go off trying to get them to quit is the problem.  There are some nights I go home with this droning sound ring in my ears.
