RPM to MPH ratio????
« on: July 23, 2004, 07:48:58 PM »
I was just wondering is there an ideal rev rate to speed ratio?
For instance:
15 MPH / X revolutions

Has anyone every read anything that talked about this?
If so what was the book or site if you remember?
What got me wondering was I watched took video of a few different bowlers
with different styles and they all had about the same ratio.

stroker 16 MPH / 4.5 rev, ratio 3.55:1
tweener/power stroker 18 MPH / 5.25 rev, ratio 3.43:1
cranker 21 MPH / 6.25 rev, ratio 3.36:1

the above speed were all calculated in time at arrows 15 ft
T * 4 / 40.91

rev rates are the amount of revolutions by the arrows
5 shots each bowler then averaged to the nearest 1/4

by the way I have a 3.43:1  15.3mph 4.45rev ave for 10 shots

I think that this ratio could be very useful when selecting
a ball if there was an actual study done on it to where a
scale could be made from the findings.

What do you think?

Edit due to a point Lucky made

Revs to pin deck assuming no roll out
Stroker - 18 revs, ratio 1.125:1
Tweener - 21 revs, ratio 1.167:1
Cranker - 25 revs, ratio 1.19:1
Me - 17.8 revs, ratio 1.163:1

I always count total revs thru the pin deck.

I think one to one is pretty good using this method.  But sometimes a little strong for today's conditions.  Particularly if one has a lot of axis rotation.

The best bowlere on today's conditions I believe are below 1 to 1 revs to speed and have a little less than 45 degrees of axis rotation.  This allows them to play a lot of different lane conditions in somewhat similar ways and have less variance in placement and dramatically different reactions due to lane conditions.

Slower speed players with a lot of revs, 1.3 to 1 revs to speed with a lot of axis rotation can really get it going but struggle adjusting.  How do I know.
I are one!

The reason I prefer to use revs in the first 15 feet is because the fact that once the ball goes into a roll the rev rate changes drastically.

The reason I say this is if you do the math:
Ball 2.25' in circumference
Lane 60' in length
60/2.25=26.67

So the total revolutions from foul line to pin deck will
vary quit a bit depending on when the ball rolls.

okay, if your so smart, calculate a 17 MPH bowler, because, um.... i want to make sure you can do it right

6.25 / 15 ft or
25 / 60 ft = 1:1

40.91/17=T
60/T=R in 60'
R/4=R in 15'
