Rules Question
« on: October 17, 2008, 02:35:29 PM »
So a buddy of mine and his wife are bowling in a tourney this weekend. He thinks they get to use their averages from two seasons ago, because they didn't bowl last year. The rules say that last years average shall be used, if there is no last years average, they use the current average of 21 games, and if there is neither of those two, they use the 06-07 average.

Here's the question. They each bowled in a SANCTIONED summer leage this year...10 weeks, 30 games. Someone told them that they didn't have to worry about it because it was a summer league...true? My opinion, that would be their "current average of 21 or more games."

And by the way, their 06-07 averages are 198 and 202, and their summer averages were 214 and 232, so it's not like there's no difference in handicap lol.

My understanding is their current average would be for the Winter 08-09 season.  It usually starts with leagues that started on or after Aug. 1st.  Summer averages are rarely used for tournaments since no official book is compiled.

To be honest, I really don't care what averages they use, because I'm not bowling in the tourney anyway, but I'd hate to see them get dq'd for the wrong averages. Just checked bowl.com and their summer averages are on there. Guess it's their problem not mine right? lol.

I think that you are correct If this is a USBC tourney they can inquire at bowl.com.

I would say at the very least they need to disclose the summer averages to the tourney director or they could face DQ for not disclosing thier current book averages.

BTW, I went to bowl.com and looked up the averages for a friend of mine that bowled a summer league this past summer, and his average for that league are listed as part of 2007-2008 book averages.

IMO that strengthens the arguement for disclosing the summer averages.

I don't believe too many tournaments take summer league averages into account.

The rules state if no 2007-2008 average, than they must use this years ave, than if no this years average, than they can use 2006-2007.
Summer leagues usally don't count, but not all associations see it that way

The rules are the rules and if there is nothing about summer averages in them, then summer averages cannot be used.

Most summer leagues in our area are not sanctioned, but if you are bowling in a sanctioned league and the averages are posted on bowl.com (summer included)  I would let the tourney director know as to avoid a dq issue.  The tournament director will then be able to make the decision.  They would probably be a lot happier than bowling the tournament only to be dq'd later.
