Is it legal before a LEAGUE starts, to go down and see what the oil pattern is... If it is illegal can someone direct me to where the rule can be found.....
thanks...

The reason I am asking is that the New Manager we have told me the other night that if he ever caught me doing it again he would forfeit my score and disqualify my team.. he said it was illegal, although I can find no rule to support his claim...
-
Exactly what were you doing to "see" the oil pattern?
-
walking down the side of Lane 1, and just seeing how long the pattern is.. I didn't think I was hurting anything, but to hear him talk I violated every sacred rule of bowling...
-
The manager could not "forfeit" the scores and games, but if you were walking in areas not considered open access to customers, he could bounce you from the premises.
-
Ocassionally they even post the oil pattern at some centers here. I have seen it done several times at the Landmark in Peoria, IL..

Just to clarify a little. The area in question is not off-limits, but from what I am hearing it is not illegal, correct??

It does not violate any ABC/WIBC rule I have ever seen...and I have never seen a league incorporate such a rule.
However, rare is the center that I have been in that allows customers or even employees not on the clock at that time to walk down the walk-ways by the end lanes (usually tiled walkways to get to the backend equipment).

I have done it, but ONLY with permission from the person in charge. I haven't done it at the start of a league - except once, when the oiling machine was leaking water (or stripper...) all over the lane, and I had to point it out to the lane man.
I know of NO abc rule to saying this is illegal.
