Title: Running up the score
Post by: agroves on October 17, 2005, 07:19:56 PM
Scenerio:
5 person teams, you are winning by 100 with only you left to bowl.  You are working on a 4 bagger into the tenth, with nothing on the line..no honor score or anything like that.

Do you hammer in the dagger?

Do you try something new?

Tonight, I tried something new.  I've really been killing myself that last game on my Monday mixed league.  I was working on a decent game the second game, we were up by 100+.  I moved in alittle and tried another shot.  I still shot 248, but didn't punch out or even throw a strike in tenth.  I do find out I could move in alittle if need be.  I didn't have a huge sub 200 fall off the last game.

What do you do?

I guess it would depend on the game. If it's the first or second game, I would see if I could fill the first frame of the 10th with some sort of strike or spare. If I throw a strike, that would hopefully give me the 11th and 12th to experiment (because sometimes its important to try to stay ahead of the transitions).

If its the third game, I don't think I would experiment because by that point your bowling night is done- unless you bowl in a 4 game league.

I've been noticing that my games have been dropping during games two and three... have to keep experimenting to find the right ball/line combination for those two games (lately I've been averaging 236+ for the first game...).

Only time I might even think about letting off the gas is in the 10th frame of game 3 if Im out of all side action. Outside of that, its the best shot on the best line at all times. No exceptions.

I throw what I think is the best shot possible to score the most pins for the night.

Anything less would be sandbagging.

Now if that is the tenth frame of the first or second game and I feel an adjustment is going to be needed. Then I’ll make the adjustment I believe is needed to get lined up for the next game.

But everything is to get as many pins as I can that night.

I may experiment with a new line or a ball change on last ball of a game only... unless on an honor score run.  Only with the intent to get better lined up / reaction for next game.

I have NEVER bagged any game in my life.  Not in my nature.

Well, if I am still in brakets, then I'll stick with what works. But like someone else said, I normally try the 10th shot no matter what, and hope to get an 11th and 12th to make adjustments...

I always try to throw three strikes in the tenth no matter what.  I believe it is always important to finish strong.  Then when it does matter, there is no difference in your approach to the frame.

I did this very thing at the end of the first game tonight.
Up by 150 pins going into the 10th, I was having NO room for error, so I tried moving outside in the tenth frame (playing down the five board). Went through the nose, but I found the line on the next shot. Dialed me in for the rest of the night.

I don't consider it sandbagging at all.

If you are trying to strike on a different line and ping a 10, that isn't sandbagging.  Now, if you are up a 100, then toss to gutters in the tenth, that might be considered sandbagging.  The majority of the time, I am already at my average...
