Rural area surcharge
« on: October 14, 2008, 03:14:50 AM »
What is the deal with this new charge by UPS.  I make a deal on here with normal ship rates calculated on there website and then go to ship and they slap a surcharge that I have to eat.  Looks like my shipping prices are going up.  Anybody else having an issue with extra charges.

FYI, the rural surcharge is not new.  I used to see it come up regularly when I worked at The UPS Store several years ago.  It's an extra charge for delivery at a location that is not quickly accessible from the driver's regular routes near the city itself.  The couple extra dollars helps the extra cost of fuel and the time that is spent having the driver go to the location.

Sorry, but this is old hat by now. There's an extra charge if the driver takes a piss break at a 7-11, more at Quick Check and less at a Waa-Waa.

Extra charge for fuel, for residential, for labels that they can't read, for Saturday deliveries, etc. etc.

There are businesses my company ships to that ups declares as residential due to where they are. It is a business location not a residence but they do it anyway.

Really bring the drivers into this about taking a piss break, most drivers don't have time to do that during their days.  Most usually piss in a bottle, trust me I know.  Been working for them for over 12 years now.  But some of the places that get the rural charge, are out of the way by many, many miles.  Just my two cents

Not every town has a major airport next to it. If you think about it, it makes sense. I'm amazed UPS or Fedex is able to get to some of these places in 24 hours period.

I guess part of my point, which I didn't explain, is that you quote somebody a price and the charge doesn't show up until you actually ship it.  I just wish you would know up front when you quote the price.  No big deal i will cover it in the future, just wanted to see if any of you have seen this.

John,

Chill out. I was making a joke.
I know they have a hard time. I used to drive part time for the Post Office.
It's not a job I'd want to do. I have intentionally not applied for UPS or FEDEX driver jobs, even though I am unemployed.

My UPS regular guy is a sweetheart and I tip him $20, cold hard cash, several times per year, not just at Christmas!

Use2begood,

I have found when I am estimating charges, for either FEDEX or UPS, I need the both the exact shipping addresses, whether they are residential or not, and the exact weight and the exact insurance amount. THEN and only then can the estimate be correct. You need to know all the details.

When I have that data, the estimates are 100% correct, at least for UPS, I am sure of.

Heck, UPS is now charging up to 10 bucks a box extra for oversized bowling bags(double, triple, and quad rollers).  When asked for a reason, it wasn't the weight, but the space it takes up.

Who needs a 300 or 800, when I have a 294 and a 295!?!?!

I am going to be shipping via Fed Ex from now on. It is not as convenient for me to get to them but when I can save $5 per package i am all over it.

I just paid nearly $22 to ship a ball from southern tier of NY to a BUSINESS ADDY San Antonio.

2 years ago it would have cost that much to ship to California.

As if that isn't bad enough the transit time to TX is the same as it was to OREGON last year!!!!

I dunno.....methinks Big Brown is slipping.
