i have meet and talked to a number of the pros, and most of them are very approachable.

the good ones I have come across are parker bohn III, brad angelo, marshall holman, carmen salvino (the nicest guy on earth), chris barnes, brian kretzer and brian himmler,  and some others were very very nice.

a couple of pros that came off as jerks to me could be walter ray (from what i've heard) ryan shafer (had an incident with him at last years us open) and george branham III (i met him when i was 12, bowling a junior pro am and he wouldnt sign ANY of the kids autographs)

Not to defend Walter Ray, I met him at the tour spot in NY
last year and find that he is uncomfortable being the center
of attention and around crowds.  Seem more of a loner, even
during practice at LI, NY he was several pairs off by himself
while the others practiced in groups.

Mike DeVaney one of the good guys, so many to list.  Voss
a crowd pleaser, Petraglia great with the younger set.
Kent, a pleasure to bowl with and talk to.  Quite accomodating.
Did not find too many that could not be approached.  Most are
just bowling alley rats who remember their roots.

Out of the one's I've met, they've all been great.  George Branham, III was really nice when I bowled a pro-am with him.  Guppy Troup was great.  Marshall Holman was very nice.  Danny Wiseman was totally cool.  I shot 279 to his 180 something and he was kidding me about being a bagger.  Even after he moved two pair down, he came back to talk with me.  Great guy.  Steve Hoskins.  Steve Wilson.  David Ozio. Amleto Monacelli.  All nice guys.

I bowled with a lot of great guys during the Quaker State Pro Am at Forum Bowl in Grand Prarie, Texas.  I hated to see that tourney go.  I got to see 2 live finals there (one in Forum and one at a high school gym.  That was different).

So, I have yet to put anyone on my "jerk" list.  Except DJ Archer.  I grew up with him (bowling with him since I was 2) and he has always been a jerk... hahaha. j/k

I talked to a number of pros a few years ago when the made there stop in Dallas and all of them were nice, I talked to Waler Ray and he seemed very nice and answered my one or two questions I asked and signed an autograph for me.  The only person I came close to haveing a probelm with was Robert Smith, but he is a good guy it was my fault.  I thought he was done bowling and he was'nt and I was going to ask him about the Easter Grip.  I said I have a question if you don't mind, he calmy siad can you wait till I'm done bowling.  I felt bad like I was intrupting him at work.  Then after he was done bowling I asked him and he was real cool about it.  One person I had fun talking to was Danny Wiseman.  Did'nt get to talk with him much but he is a cool guy.

The only pro I've met so far was Parker Bohn III at his annual scholarship tourney (placed 7th out of like 100 some people) and he was REALLY nice, and a really cool guy. He signed a paper for me (which I have framed lol) and answered questions, and he helped set up and run the tourney as much as anyone else there. Great guy. (Darn lefty though )

I was talking with a former pro one day, and he taught me something that I hadn't thought about...

In baseball, basketball, tennis, or any other sport, the players are able to cool off after a match/game in the locker room, completely away from the fans.  When you're competing at that high of a level, some people have to put themselves into a "zone" to concentrate and be the best they can be.  Everybody is different, however.

This ex-pro that I spoke with told me how it would generally take him at least 30 minutes to come down and out of the mind set he was in while bowling.  The difference with bowling is, the pros can come right out of a match after losing by a pin or two, turn around, and somebody is in his/her face with something to sign or whatnot.

So it's usually not that they are jerks, but rather they need a "digestion" period after their big meal (match).  Leave it to me to use a food analogy!

Now some people, like Brian Voss for instance, can interact with a crowd while they are bowling, and might not need that wind down time after a match.  Everybody is different.  If you want to deem somebody a jerk or a nice guy, it might be more fair to wait an hour, then try to talk to them to see what they are like.  Remember, they are in the middle of paying their bills usually when you see them.  Their performance dictates whehter their electric bill gets paid this month.

I met quite a few at the TOC last year. Met WRW, he seemed kind of timid, although this could go back to the previous reply about him not wanting to be the center of attention. Met Chris Barnes, Pat Healey Jr, Randy Pederson and Brian Himmler. Also got to bowl with Brad Angelo over this past summer. He and I exchange email addresses and he gave me his phone # if I ever need "Professional" Advice. Angelo is great as well as all the others. Himmler seems like the kind of guy I can go grab a beer with!! That would be fun!

Amen, brother!  I saw both Dale and Dave at a regional last year.  Neither one of them had time to talk to anyone.  Dave got his check and walked out the door.  What a prick.  He blew right by a maybe 12 year old holding a bowling pin and marker.

I have met a few of them. I have found them all to be very nice. I bowled  pro-ams with Billy Orlikowski, George Branham III and Eugene McCune. All were excellent. George was a little quiet, but nice none the less. Eugene had a wild sense of humor, a little sarcastic, funny guy. Billy O was bowling out of a town a few miles away and I had seen him a number of times and had the occasion to bowl against him in league. A real class act. In the pro-am, he had about 220 to my 248 and he slapped me five and said "nice game". He comes back the next game, with a different partner, on the pair next to us with a 300. I went to congratulate him and he apologizes for bowling so bad with me. I have also met WRW, Jason Couch, Mika and Brian Kretzer, all nice guys too.

The most memorable pro I met was Earl Anthony. In the early 80's, in my hometown, a pro-shop had him stop by for a visit while he was in Michigan bowling at a nearby tournament. He was doing promo work for Ebonite. It would be hard to imagine a better ambassador for a sport then him. He was gracious, funny, helpful, and so modest. I left there totally impressed with him.

Pro bowlers are like any one of us, some nice, some jerks. I feel I have been fortunate to meet some of the nice ones.

Isn’t this great that you guys can have this discussion?
How many of you have had a chance to really interact with the stars of Golf, Baseball, Football, you name it. Sometimes we just don’t know how lucky we have it.
There are a lot of great guys out there but you need to add Michael Haugen Jr to your list.
Bowl great!
