Wasn't planning for this post to be a statement on Ebonite's popularity, but I will throw this in:
I bowl in the Deep South and yes, oil is a problem (specifically, the lack of it). Unless you're going to be bowling on a USBC White/Blue league, Kegel league or PBAX, you don't need anything aggressive down here unless you're Two-Rev Johnny.
Ebonite Corp, specifically Hammer, is very popular here, owing to the fact that our local pro shops are Ebo shops. If someone goes in and has no idea what they want, chances are they'll be walking out with a Hammer or Ebonite piece. There's a little bit of Columbia out there but not much. Curiously, Track has almost no presence whatsoever. They're not even on the shelves.
For the rest of the bowlers, it's a mix. Brunswick has made a comeback (lots of Rattlers out there). We've got a 900 Global staffer living in the area now and there's starting to be quite a bit of 900G/AMF stuff out there thanks to word-of-mouth.
Lane #1 has a very solid following. I would actually say there's more of it than there is any other non-Ebo ball in our house. Most of the Lane #1 users here are the top-end bowlers. There isn't much "Diamond core worship" or any of that, just a bunch of guys who've had good luck with the equipment over the years and keep buying it.
Some Storm/Roto, not much. I'm the only person I know with a Motiv ball. A couple of people throw Visionary, LaneMasters, Elite and MoRich. No AZO or Seismic yet.
