Sandbagging at age 8?
« on: April 15, 2010, 12:44:23 PM »
We had a local youth tournament last weekend called the BB&T Rising Stars.  I wasn''t here to watch but there were over 400 bowlers at different ages from age 6 to 18.  Format was 3 games, and they placed you in an average divison depending on what your average was, highest total pinfall+handicap.

The tournament gives out scholarship money, $500 to the winners of each average division, $200 for second place, and the 2 top bowlers get to bowl in the national finals later in the summer from what I understand.

Here''s what raised the red flag for me:

In the 110-145 average division there were 2 brothers that finished 1st and 2nd respectively.  Ages were 8 and 9, and there averages were 117 and 120.  What did they shoot?

The 117 average bowler goes 169-199-242

The 120 average bowler goes 233-189-190

From my point, its obvious that momma and daddy got these boys bagging at age 8 and its b.s.

Do they rerate juniors?  If so, they'll be rerated at some point.

If they have average divisions why make it handicapped at all? Sounds like a system that doubly favors sandbagging.

1. They get to bowl against less skilled bowlers.
2. And they get more pins on top of that.

I think the system sounds broken. Why not just make age divisions? at that age those kids probably would have won their "age division" anyways and thus there would be no need to sandbag AND they could have won fair.

Look on the bright side... you just got to witness two future politicians before everybody knows who they are.  After election day in 30 years, you'll get to be the guy on a TV interview who says "Yeah, I watched the president win a bowling tournament when he was 8 years old."
