Sandbagging Question
« on: December 14, 2008, 01:20:54 PM »
Today I subbed in a league and go 204 204 and in the third game i go strike strike in the tenth and need one for the triplicate. Do you consider it sandbagging if you choose to go for the 1.  On a side note the game total and my point were locked up.

To me, going for the single pin is just trying for the triplicate.

I'd personally go for the triplicate. However, I could see how someone could call you a sandbagger for it.

Personally, I try to do my best on every shot I make.  Maybe that's why I've never had a triplicate.  --  JohnP

I wouldn't call it sandbagging, especially if you call your shot prior to rolling the last ball.

The rule regarding sandbagging specifically refers to manipulating your average so as to gain an advantage in handicap competition, whether there's an actual handicap given to each player or the competition is divided into average ranges like Nationals.

Are you deliberately throwing off to get an advantage later on?  Doubt it.  Unless you're planning on intimidating your opponents by waving your triplicate patch in their faces.  Or you plan on using the patch to somehow distract your opponent (maybe you are gonna throw it at them).

I would venture to say that most triplicates have some "help" like that and I would never consider getting a 1 on the fill ball sandbagging when going for a triplicate.  A sandbagger would get 0.

Plus, it's actually pretty hard to just get one pin.

While the patches are nice, it's an award that is not worth it.  It would be a hallow award to get if you intentially shot for it (unless it was a 900).  They are an award for oddity, nice to have but totally meaningless.  Just like a Dutch, in truth, not a very good game, but they still make it an award.

Now if you had to strike for your trip, then it would be worth something.  That being said, the one that I got, in the 10th frame of the last game, I had to go 7 count spare six count to get it.  I said the hell with it and tried to strike out, but sucked so bad that I went 7/6.

I did end up shooting for just the 7 and clipped out the 4 and 8.  Even though I wanted to shoot for it I sorta felt like i should have shot the rack and gone for a strike.

couple of ways 2 look at this

if you needed a strike for the tri patch would be fine ,
so 1 pin makes difference. but what if I needed 8 so I
throw ball 1 board off tring to get a 8 count you wouldn't know
unless said.

unless had game and total won hard to say unless in that position
unless needed a 8,9 count or X I would wait till next time myself.

If your point and game total were already locked, then I see no problem in going for the triplicate.  You weren't costing your team anything and were trying to do something that doesn't get done that often.

So did you do it? Also I see no issue with it heck what will say 10 or 15 pins in 1 game make to your average over say 40+ games?

While shooting to take out only 1 stick for a triplicate, you would be purposely not doing your very best on that particular shot, no matter how you look at it.

Throwing your very best on each and every shot is the way the game is intended to be played, regardless of how one tries to rationalize a situation to fit their own ego.

So even though, as someone has already mentioned, you wouldn't be detrimentally skewing your total average over the course of many games during the season, you would be looked at by quite a few of your fellow competitors as someone who places individual goals over the integrity of the game, which is your case, since you made the decision to go for a trivial triplicate.

May you have learned a valuable lesson from this experience.
