.......Sandbagging?
« on: March 06, 2005, 12:31:30 PM »
I know this was posted months ago, but I can't remember what the answer was.  So i'll ask for myself.  I've been wanting to improve, and took vids and got suggestions.  I'm thinking about finishing out the remaining weeks with my plastic ball, trying to hone my accuracy and repetition.  I figure, i'll be better off that way since plastic won't cover up any mistakes.  It seemed all well and good, but then i realize, would this be considered sandbagging?  I'm not intentionally trying to do bad, but the whole point of plastic is to make sure i don't get strikes and such from bad shots, which could possible lower my scores.  I'm not sure if I'll do worse, probably not, i don't think it's possible, but I'm just wondering if you saw a bowler doing this, would you think "Hmm, what a sandbagger" or, "That guys trying to further his bowling".

Just wondering?

Yeah, I am.  I know, I could "get away with it", but I'm really asking more from a moral standpoint.

What is your average now? Is it in the 180s or higher? If it's anything below 170, I doubt anyone is going to care.

Use your Power Groove and "Pimp Zone" only the rest of the way. Doubt anybody will really think its sandbagging unless you've been avg 170+ and start putting up 120's for scores. If you know it will help your game, go for it. Use the rest of the year and summer as practice for shot making/spare shooting and up your avg 20 pins for next year.....as long as it is with Big B (LA Nacion!).

57, do you practice or only bowl league?  If you practice, then why not only use plastic at that time and continue to use in league what you have been using up to this point.

If you dont practice, then you are not going to become a good bowler just because you use plastic during league play.

One problem is that if you set a "plastic" average and then use that average to enter tournaments using your regular reactive/particle balls.  To me, that would be sandbagging, even if your intentions are not to bowl badly using plastic.

To be the most honest, have an average using your usual equipment and a separate one for plastic.  Two leagues, or league plus practice.  Since your average using your regular stuff will likely be higher than your plastic average, tournaments will take that average first.  You're not sandbagging (in the eyes of the tournament and other tournament bowlers) but you are still using plastic to increase your accuracy.

Problem is that there is only 1 youth league we can bowl around here. After this season there will be 2 leagues we can do, and that I am going to do, I'm not sure about andy. He doesn't do very many tournaments, hes done about 2 out of the last 18 or so of them. I think the power groove and mali zone would be good to work with.

Nah, I almost never bowl tournaments.  I'm not good enough to beat the real sandbaggers, and i'd die in scratch, so I don't play tournaments.  I'm probably not even doing the state tourney this year....

I haven't really found anything that works in league anyways, I've actually used my plastic a bunch of times, but not for the reason i'm doing now.

There are no "Real Sandbaggers" in YABA, just a bunch of kids with a ton of inconsistancy.  And anyone that's bowled YABA in the past 10 years can tell you the same thing.

i read in another thread that you avg around 140, don't know if you were being sarcastic or truthful. personally, after viewing your vids i guessed somewhere in the 150s, but that is my opinion. as for sandbagging, if ur avg is really 140, nobody is even gonna notice/care if you start throwing plastic and ur avg drops to 120s.

i agree that kids in yaba don't sandbag intentionally, but are just really inconsistent. i have seen yaba kids shoot like 270s then the next game shoot sub 120s. people really only care if you are sandbagging and winning their money, via tournaments/league. if you look like you have great form/execution, maybe like you should at least be averaging 190+ but come in with a 160, people are gonna say something and complain. in ur case, since you say you don't' bowl tournaments or very many, i don't think people are going care. however, i don't think just bowling with plastic is gonna make you that much better of a bowler. i would guess it would just piss you off more, since scores will be less and the game will not be as fun. since you just started, you might as well have fun and try to score and eventually you will get better, not many people just start out averaging 200s.

At this point in the season you've already established an average.  Most tournaments take your highest average.  You could always report a higher average on your entry forms.  And I don't think anyone has ever gotten in trouble for overstating an average.  however, since you don't bowl many tournaments, your average isn't a big concern, unless of course you hurt your team and you and your team cares about winning that really cool trophy they give out at the end of jrs.

In the other post, I said i average 124, which i was kidding about.  I'm more like 127.  J/K, j/k.

It's not gonna make me any worse, since i never get many strikes anyways.  It will just teach me to be more accurate.  I won't get mad, since i've already been doing bad with reactives.

Andy, if you honestly average under 140, you don't need more than 2 bowling balls anyways(I looked at your profile and noticed you have about 6, don't know if you actually carry them all or not).  I coach kids at the junior league that I came up through and notice that problem with more than a few of them.  At this point in your bowling career, you need to focus on fundamentals and hitting your target.
