Sandbagging?
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:14:52 AM »
I average around 240 or above the last two years on THS and next year I am only bowl a PBA X league and mixed doubles with my wife. My question is if I decided to only use urethane for my mixed league would you consider that sandbagging?

No because it is league, which is meant for practicing and nothing more. Of course people are going to talk because they have nothing better to do.

Depends on your motives for using only urethane.

There really isn't any motiv behind it. I am just looking for a challenge for myself. There isn't any money to be made on a nightly basis in the league so whats the point of throwing my good equipment there. The only reason I bowl in the league is to keep my wife happy. I don't really bowl many handicap tournaments other than our city and state tournaments.

As long as it's for a challenge, I don't see a problem with that. Just don't randomly switch to reactive one week when you average is down, because that will really get the people talking.

The league literally pays maybe a hundred dollars difference top to bottom per team so it's not worth it to do that.

I agree.  If you're only using urethane to drop your average from 240 to 210 or something like that for tournament purposes, then I might consider that bagging.

I really dont think it would drop that much. I pretty sure I can crack well into the 220's with urethane.

Then read it again because you obviously don't understand what you read. I will explain it to you, I am not throwing strictly urethane in PBA X. I am considering throwing it in MIXED DOUBLES on a THS. Understand now.

Thanks for clearing that up, I don't know what got over me.

By the way, how many titles are you winning next year on the PBA?  I mean you average 240, you must be good.

There is no rule keeping someone from using a ball in league. You can throw what ever you want. If you want to use a house ball in mix league...go right ahead. Anyone challenging you is going to lose. USBC has no rules to force you to throw a reactive ball over a urethane or plastic in league. I can't imagine how that rule would be written or enforced. BALL POLICE???

Where are all the posters on here that state its the bowler not the ball.

In your question with Urethane. You might see a dip in average, but I think the challenge you are looking for would be to go to something like plastic. I bowled first half of a year with Urethane on a THS. My average was about the same as with reactive.

Here is the issue I think anyone will have if they find out you bowled a league with a Urethane ball and then decided to bowl City/State and showed up with an arsenal of resin and whatever else.

But....that's my take on it.

Then they can refigure my PBA X league average like they do for others if it's a problem. I know there is going to be poeple that complain, thats what bowlers do. I just can't see it called sandbagging when you throw every shot to the best of your ability. The ball I throw is my choice, right?
