Need some opinions
« on: April 26, 2010, 11:25:42 AM »
I''m looking for a strong pearl bowling ball. The maker isn''t that important, just looking for something that will give a big turn on the backend. I like to play staighter up the boards around 8 to 12 board with ball speed around 17 mph. I''m looking for something that will get through the heads and grab hard on the backend.

Thanks

I am 17 at the pins and more of a stroker, but I can still crank it if I want to. I prefer to play the stroker style more than anything now. So with the speed of my shots I'm looking for something that will grab at the ends.

Just out of curiosity, what is your bowling style (stroker, tweener, cranker)  Also, is the 17mph at the pins or at your release?

Reason,  is that if you are a stroker, you should go with something like a Reign or 920A (higher end).  If you are more a tweener or cranker, you may want to go with something more mid performance that still has a strong cover (Rattler, Python, LaneBreaker, 715A).  Another consideration is the Freeze which has a high end cover that people say is stronger than they thought and strong off the dry but is well below high end cost.

If anyone out there is worried about the scores being too high, try duckpin!!

That helps ALOT.  17 at the pins means you are around 18-18.5 at your release so you are fairly speed dominate.  Definitely want to go higher end with either a Reign or 920A.  I would do a 55 x 4.5 x 30 and put a weight hole down in the P2 or P3 location.  Pin up will get the ball through the front part of the lane and the weight hole down will help the ball peel off the friction on the backend.

Loved the Ogre Pearl and New Breed Pearl for playing down and in.....and both balls will allow you to move and still get strong results.

I'd give a thumb's up to TWOHAND834's advice.

I've never thrown a 920A but own Reign and goes long and comes off the spot hard.

For reference I also throw 17-17.5 mph at the pins and have 275-300 rpm's - which makes me slightly speed dominate. My Reign is drilled pin over ring 4.5 x 4 stacked with no x-hole - sorry I don't know the angles, I'd guess 45 x 4.5 x ???. We left the hole out on purpose to see if I needed one to help with the reaction, but for me it works great without the hole. It's always easier to add the hole later, assuming you don't have to add one after drilling.

I can play it straighter on fresh shots and it opens up the lanes as the shot breaks down. It always seems to get easy length but because it's so strong on the back end it definitely lets you know when it should be put away.

al g,

If your pin is above ring finger and cg stacked under, you have more of a 80 x 4.5 x 30 drilling.  If you drill the MB with the thumb, you have a 90 degree drilling. The farther you get towards your axis point, the closer to 10 degrees you are getting.
