Sandbagging?
« on: June 09, 2005, 06:41:13 AM »
Recently saw this scenario happen the other night in a summer league.  Averages were re-rated after the second week.  Bowler #1 books an average in the 230's..struggled the first two weeks of the league shooting a couple of low 800 sets(4 game league), and came into week three with a 203 average.  Bowler #2 who was on the other team, books an average in the 220's, and also came into week 3 sporting a 203 average.  Bowler #2 accused bowler one of sandbagging.  Bowler #1 went out and shot a 960 block, and bowler #2 shot a high 700, low 800 block, while throwing plastic the last game and intenionally missing the head pin.  I have a few questions, one, is two weeks really a determination of sandbagging?  And also, does it make it right when the other bowler gets angry and intentionally throws a low game to drop their average? Mind you, the other person on their team, also threw away their last game as well.

I don't believe in sandbagging one little bit. It is just dishonest and you will never get the respect that you so desire from doing this. I just try to do as well as I can when I bowl and some days are up and some are down. Never would I sink that low as to sandbag.

Sandbagging is the application of intentionally playing less than one's real ability.  Weather it's one shot or a thousand shots.

I don't know about other bowlers, I just try to improve and learn every time I bowl. If I'd try to throw a low game, how would I learn better technique, form, delivery, release, etc... If others do it to get their handicap adjusted, so be it. I play to get better and to have fun and to see how well I can actually bowl... That's just me I guess, I don't have time worrying about others who chose to manipulate the scoring. My 2 cents.

This is something your league must deal with. As far as I have been able to search, there isn't any rule against this, NOT that it is right, I don't think it was ever really looked at for a rule.

Your league can, but be careful, set a rule against this. Keeping in mind, everyone has a "bad night" so I'd be careful when you design a rule about pin count vs. scores thrown, but your league has the 'power' to set rules against this. I know (my wife is president of our league) we are looking at a rule about this. Not sure the exact pin count before it is determined to be sandbag, but we're working on it.

As I said, everyone can have a bad night, but I think , to 'throw' a game, is just plain stupid. I am against the lane..pins..that's how I approach the game, me against the equipment. I can not change or effect what another player shoots, like in golf, but I can control, to a point, what I shoot and that's the point of the game, for me.

Not sure I would be able to call sandbagging in the case of Bowler 1...the difference between a low duece and 230 is less than a couple of trip 10's per game.  The differences in house maintenance during summer can easily account for that.

Bowler 2's change to plastic for one game only raises an eyebrow.  It is one thing to make a decision to throw only plastic in a given league (I did that this season, with the additional use of pearl urethane), but it is another to use it in only one game to lower the overall set (which appears to be the case here).  However, one week does not present a strong enough case for National to ultimately be able to sustain a claim of sandbagging.

What is your handicap based on? We're obviously not talking about a 90% of 200 league....

There is a rule in the book regarding "bowling beneath one's ability to gain an unfair advantage", but enforcing this rule takes a lot of work on someone's part.
