New Ball Advice
« on: December 21, 2012, 12:59:00 PM »
Okay, so I'm getting myself a new ball for my birthday in February. Now that I've gotten better in my game, I want to try a solid coverstock.
I have, in order of strength:
Track Mean Machine (1500 grit)
Track 916AT (500/2000 grit)
Track 920A (500+Rough Buff)
Track Power Machine (1500+High Gloss)
Roto Grip Mars (500+Rough Buff+High Gloss)

I have narrowed my list to 5 so far. There may be more that come out in January, but I am most likely going to stay with these picks. Here they are in order of what I want most, along with the rationale behind it:

Roto Grip Shooting Star: This ball just seems super smooth at one hell of a price. I've been eye-balling this one since it came out and finances simply haven't been there.

Roto Grip Disturbed: I really like this one because I don't have anything symmetric at this strength. This one looks like it could be used when I need to control the breakpoint. Basically, since the Shooting Star is discontinued, I am looking at this ball if I can't find a Shooting Star.

Ebonite Cyclone: Basically, I like the fact that I can get a similar reaction to the One, which I never got to throw. A guy on my league has a cyclone at 4000 and it is a beauty on the house shot.

Lane #1 Pink Panther: My doubles partner is adamant about me trying Lane #1. He is a big fan of the kool-aid and is always saying how their cores are heavier and more dense than any other brand and that's why they hit so hard (even though his hit like marshmallows, he gets great carry). He told me he could get me one of these balls drilled for less than $100 and he would buy it off me if I didn't like it.

Hammer Cobalt Vibe: I never got to throw any of the Black Widow series, and the Taboos are just too strong for my conditions. Didn't like the cover/core match-ups for my game. Love the Vibe core and remember everyone loving the first two widows.

I'm not looking to replace any balls in my arsenal, but I am looking to try out new things (symmetric solids) to get better all around.

If you can get a Pink Panther drilled for $100, that's a steal. Very versatile ball. I love mine.

My vote is for the Mass Eruption.  That ball is phenominal and what Chris Barnes used to win on tv 2 weeks ago.

Never really thought about the Mass Eruption. I guess I'll have to look into that one as well haha. Too many choices.

Hard to go wrong with the Cyclone,I have one at 3000 grit with a pin down layout, and a second at box finish with a pin up drilling. With those two balls,I can tackle the majority of the houses in my area.Great ball for a very reasonable price.

That's my thoughts. Not many people have them around here, but the ones that do make bowling look much easier than it is.

Did you use the same color for both Cyclones?

The Shooting Star is a good buy for the price.  I've used the Rising Star before and the Neutron Core found in both retain energy better than some other symmetrical cores I've used in the past.  Generally, the Roto Grip solid covers tend to be a bit smoother than their Storm counterparts.  They're also versatile.

That's my main reason in wanting this piece, Tommyboy. Every video has it really smooth no matter the drilling or surface prep.

I think you would like it.  All of the solid covers I use at this point for the most part are from Roto Grip.  Now, their entry and midrange stuff typically have an even arcing reaction that's easy to read and predictable.  I've seen this with the Shooting Star and it's also the case with my Outlaw.

The exception is my Defiant.  It's angular, but not as angular in back as the VG Nano that I used to have.

We tend to get a lot of wet/dry in tournaments and summer leagues here, and the Shooting Star looks perfect to eliminate that. My 916AT takes it out of play as well, but it is just too strong sometimes.

No,my pin up Cyclone is the orange yellow, purple, and my pin down Cyclone is the gold silver, and black. Please note that even with the different drillings, both balls were long and strong. It wasn't until I changed the surface of the pin down ball that I got the desired smooth, earlier reaction.I generally start with this ball, and then switch to the pin up ball as I have to migrate in and open up the lane.

+1 I like the Shooting Star for the versatility and price. Also I agree Roto's balls tend to be smoother and earlier in the midlane than sister company Storm.
