Saw something great and sad at the lanes today
« on: March 06, 2010, 02:02:08 PM »
Every Saturday a house here holds a King of the Hill tourney.  There''s usually around 50 or so guys (and ladies) that show up, but there were over 70 today from all over the area.

Today a guy came up that doesn''t make it every Saturday, but he''s there often enough.  He had a day that we all dream of.  279-300-300 to break our city record by 11 pins.  He''s a heck of a nice guy and obviously a pretty good bowler.

When talking to some other guys down there after this terrific achievement, it was odd that they just didn''t seem very impressed.  A couple even told me that it was no big deal.  The reason?  The guy that just threw 35 out of 36 (left a 9 pin) is a lefty.  Oh, and we move pairs after every game with no practice shots on the new lanes.

I could go on about this for awhile, but really I''m just saddened and a little pissed off by it.  Everyone there was witness to a set that they will probably never see again and there were mixed feelings because of what hand the guy bowls with?  My best guess is that people are both ignorant and jealous.  Maybe they think that if they were lefties that they could do it themselves?

I took a very crappy vid with my cell phone of his last 2 shots that I will put up later.  Wall or not, lefty or righty, you get props from me when you shoot like that.

thats a hell of an accomplishment no matter what hand you throw with. Everyone should agree that lefties do have a slight advantage but to be able to throw 35-36 shots is amazing!

lefites will never be looked at as equals in bowling. Even though the greatest bowler of all time "statisticly" is a righty

It IS sad when idiots let jealosy get in the way of common sense. Common sense says that kind of scoring is rare, and should be appreciated.

If it were so easy it would be done all the time, and MAYBE from one of those "superior" rightys...

And no, I'm not left-handed.

In 98 the city high here was 858 and I bowled an 851 (298 6/8 split, 287 6/8 split on 11th shot, 266) and I got the same treatment because I was left hand. I over-heard two guy talking when I was in the middle of my 3rd game that if I beat the city high that there should be an * by my name in the book. One other time bowling a 12 game block to make the Iowa state bowling team I was +187 and 2nd was +36 and that was because I was left handed even though next highest left hander was 12th place and lanes were re-oiled after ever 3rd game and moved pairs

I love when I bowl a righty for some money on a fresh pair of lanes with nobody else bowling with us and they complain about it if I win because Im left handed people are brain washed they dont even understand why the rumor is being left handed is easier On certain shots being a lefty can be an advantage but I am gonna tell you right now I bowl some regionals and tough sport condition tournaments and being a lefty can also kill you quickly on certain patterns rightys can break the pattern down by playing together and really open the shot up to a wide margin of error where as it stays fresh for all 8 games for the lefty with no margin for error

When a hall of famer (as a national hall of famer) told me that lefties "shouldn't be allowed to bowl" I realized that most people in this game are complete idiots.

The idea is that the left side of the lane receives less traffic than the right.  With four right-handers on a pair, the right side will change significantly over the course of a few games.  If there's only one lefty on the pair, that side won't change much if at all.  The left-hander doesn't have to make guesses about lane transition the way the righties do.

Also, when they move pairs between games or blocks, the lefty is likely to find lanes that have almost no breakdown on the left side while the righties will have to guess how to bowl in the beginning.

There are some weeks where the left side has a very clear advantage.  It's not often, and there are just as many weeks where a little bit of breakdown or transition is what the lefties need to shoot big scores.  But with no one breaking the oil down, they're stuck with bad ball reaction.  Righties may have bad reaction for one game but then it's high scores for the next four or five games.

Ultimately, I believe it's a wash.  I do not begrudge the left side.  If I want to beat a left-hander, I need to throw good shots and get strikes, same as for righties.  If I get beaten and I didn't throw 300, then there's room for me to have done better and maybe I should have done so.

Great post...I have tried explaining this to people on many occasions but they only see the House Shot advantage.

Congratulations to the bowler for a great series.

The only advantage the LHs have is that it is easier for them to make the ten pin spare.

Obviously they have their disadvantages too.  Agree with posts by 86camaroman and Shelley.
