Sawbones and Us Portsiders...
« on: February 04, 2004, 01:07:47 AM »
The Vikings called the side of their ship its board, and they placed the steering oar, the "star" on the right side of the ship, thus that side became known as the "star board." It's been that way ever since. And, because the oar was in the right side, the ship was tied to the dock at the left side. This was known as the loading side or "larboard". Later, it was decided that "larboard" and "starboard" were too similar, especially when trying to be heard over the roar of a heavy sea, so the phrase became the "side at which you tied up to in port" or the "port" side.

The vikings became confused, as they were mostly righthanded (starboarders) . . . Eventually, portsiders took up bowling, and became much, more proficient at the game, than the "starboarders".

All the righties had left, was the joy of watching the "lefthanded wonders" win at the game. In fact the term crying in "one's beer" became popular due to the lefty bowling influx and gerater proficiency. Of course most of the smart "starboarders", switched sides, as they realized it was not hard to do. We just throw it left of twenty.

Sucker, hope you noted that the Vikings had the good sense to place the "Steering oar" on the correct side.  The thing that made the ship go where it was intended.  Had they placed it on the wrongside, Columbus might still be in the Indian Ocean.

If a lefty had invented the steering oar, and owned the ship . . . the steering would have been installed properly. Vikings would have had to steer with their left hands, and this would have carried on into the bowling centersof the future. All bowlers would be bowling lefthanded, and there would be no complaints.

OK, maybe my logic is a little fuzzy.

No way, if Columbus would have been a lefty he wouldn't have had to spend so much time adjusting and would have found America years earlier.

Somebody bad mouthing Vikings?  Do you want a piece of the greatness which is me?  Do ya?  No Viking ever became confused.  We merely have our own way of seeing things - the RIGHT way.  And no Viking ever "cried in his beer."  The beer never lasted long enough for that.  And all true Vikings would immediately lop off the left hand of anyone caught using it for anything other than fighting or drinking (takes two hands for a real Viking to drink.)

Just bad mouthing righties . . . Bars are always full of righties, after bowling, complaining about carrydown, How they just missed 800 because of a couple of lousy  <insert pin of choice> pins.

I'm the luckiest man on the face of this planet . . . I'm a left handed bowler. And I know it.

Sucker, if you wrongsiders are as good as you claim to be, how many of you have won an event on the PBA tour this yr?  When they put down a shot that requires talent, where are the wrongsiders?
The PBA should be the benchmark for bowling and as far as I know, they try to make it fair on both sides, so how come we don't see at least 4 wrongsiders every show?  Bones

Bones,
Well, the year isn't over.
I really don't think the PBA or anyone else wants a predominantly lefty field on the telecast.
Don't pay much attention to the PBA, I'm to busy bowling.
I'm not a good bowler by any stretch. I've averaged over 200 since 1972, but I'm not impressed by numbers. It comes down to: Who can strike when they absolutely have to.

Okay, without getting anyone upset....yeah right, what the heck.

The days of lefty domination are over BECAUSE....and I have been paying attention..I gave enough of my money to them in the 80's.  On old wood, some houses were literally so burned up on the right side, that no matter how much oil you put out there, it would just evaporate.  As you know, the righties have a track...why didn't the lefties?  Their side remained cleaner due to the lack of use and play, so when a decent player got on it, it just held up and they would score forever.  HOWEVER, with the implementation of synthetic lanes, we had houses around here that were all left hand dominant and now they no longer are!  Our track isn't burned up anymore and even though we still have to make faster and larger adjustments still in comparison, the right handed game is pretty competitive against a lefty these days...assuming the shot is similar on both sides.  The better man has been prevailing...(righty), oh sorry, was I thinking out loud again?  Anyone else see this happening?

Yeah, I see MIKA dominating. I was looking at some old footage of him. He is a very well-conditioned athlete, a real credit to bowling.
I love his attitude. He's there to bowl and win.
I've been lurking and reading Sawbones posts for a few months.
He's almost convinced to change hands . . .

I completely agree Bones,  I have a lefty on my team in our big scratch league and he complains about having to make an adjustment because he has ONE other lefty with him "slightly" changing his shot.  UNBELIEVEABLE, he just keeps finger pointing at every other lefty we have to bowl against because that lefty is changing his shot!  So then I just point at the other SIX RIGHTIES on my pair and don't say a word to him!  It's actually very interesting...I'm starting to look at him like a deer and why they haven't learned to run from headlights yet!!  HAHAHA....

Well if everything is equaling out and there is no more lefty dominance. Then why do you continue to say we have it so much easier than the righties?

No1, the days of saying you wrongsiders have it easier are over in houses that are learning how to make lanes play more evenly on both sides.

If you freaks want to continue to have the advantage we correct bowlers wish we had if we were the only bowler on our side, you will have to pick the houses that still put down the same amount of oil on both sides.

Bones

But the thing is I don't want any kind of advantage. He11, I want all the challenge I can get. How can I get better unless I bowl against people better than I am?

As far as being called a freak....well, I'd be offended if I gave a dam.

no1bucsfan,

Bones doesn't realize that leftys have thick skin.
We're always being ragged on.
I love when someone gets in my face about  my lefthandedness.
Makes me focus more, and bowl better, and better, and better . . .

Sucker and No1, there was one sport where I did like to see a lefty and that was on the mound in baseball.  Being a correct hitter(rt hand) I loved to see the ball coming into me rather than away from me. Lefties never did learn to throw a backup ball, much like wrongsiders have never learned to throw a straight ball in bowling.

I really dont hate lefties, I just tolerate them.

Bones,
I tolerate righties, do I have a choice?
There are so many of you guys out in the world.

Bones,

I resoect your opinion in other bowling topics to argue with you over this one. Your opinion of lefties has left a bad taste in my mouth that I must now go try and wash out.

See ya in another topic Homie.
