How to get the feel of a good shot faster
« on: February 04, 2004, 08:44:00 PM »
One of the weakest parts of my game is that it takes me too long to get the "feel" of my strike shot when I am just beginning a bowling session, league or practice.  I find that it usually takes between 5 and 10 frames before my body remembers how to throw a good shot.  I might not throw bad shots during the first 5 frames or so, but they are not great.  During these first few frames I am happy to pick up a strike and spare the rest.

I am not having problems with what line I am going to play or any small adjustments to that line as these are fairly constant from week to week and I don't have much trouble in this area.

Let me give you an example of how my "feel" is different on the 1st ball of the night compared to the 15th.  The first ball feels heavier in my hand.  The approach feels very mechanical and my swing feels tight.  As I throw more balls though, the ball feels lighter, the approach is more fluid and the swing is more effortless.  This is when I can start getting multiple strikes.

I utilize all my practice time before the leagues start, 6.5 minutes or so but with 8 bowlers on two lanes I am lucky to get in three/four frames.

I am sorry if I am not describing what I mean by the "feel" very well, I have a hard time using words to describe a physical feeling.

I would appreciate any tips that you better bowlers have learned over the years.

Thanks,
Ryan

You are just stiff that's all.

You might want to do some stretches at home before you
come in.  Holding the ball in your hand and swinging it, but not letting go.
holding the ball with both hands and bending down between your legs.
Some squats, and some lunges.
