Survey on Chiropractic treatments?
« on: January 20, 2005, 07:50:31 AM »
1. How many BR members go to a Chiropractor?

2. Do you think it works?

3. Why did you go to the Chiropractor?

I'll start:

I go for monthly adjustments, and a full body massage.

I'm a firm believer in chiropractic.

I was diagnosed with polio in 1953. I was diagnosed with scoliosis in 1957. It was chiropractic or spinal surgery.

I go once a week.

When I was 18, I stuck and fell while bowling. Landed with all my weight on the palm of my right hand. I jammed something in my neck, and "tore" a nerve over the shoulder blade. The orthopedist my mother (an RN) sent me to wanted to to neck surgery immediately. I was 18. I refused. VIOLENTLY.

Then when I was about 24, I lost feeling in my right hand, had no grip strength whatsoever. 6 months of physical therapy, and I was about 60%.

I dealt with this for years. When I was 30, we were doing some work on our house, and I lifted something I shouldn't. I went in to work the next day, dragging my left leg a bit. A co-worker told me to get to the chiropractor. I refused. He then said that if I went, and didn't see any relief, he'd pay for the visit himself.

I went. She worked on me for 2 1/2 hours. Afterwards, I was pain free for the first time in 12 years. In fact, there was so much relief, I was physically stoned for weeks while the endorphin level in my blood went down.

9 1/2 years ago I suffered a very serious back injury, when I was hit on the right hip by around 150 LARGE (costco) shopping carts being pushed by a car after the store closed. (I was standing talking to the manager about another matter when this happened.)

I have chronic pain due to this injury, but have avoided surgery and inactivity thanks to my chiropractor.

In fact, I credit him with the fact that I can walk - let alone bowl.

For the sake of brevity, I won't go into details. I have been going to a chiropractor for over 20 years. On the ranch, things happen. Sometimes it takes several office visits before I am able to be pain-free, sometimes only a call or two.

I have had problems looked at by orthopedists but all they have done for me is give me pills and say the problem will go away in time. I have found that DC's correct the problem. Sometimes in one or two calls, sometimes many more but always resulting in relieving the pain.

Last June, I flipped my ATV, landing on my neck and shoulder. In the ER, the doctor suspected a broken collar bone and possibly a broken neck but x-rays  proved him wrong. I was told I had torn my rotator cuff and would need surgery. I immediately sought the services of my DC. He confirmed I had torn 3 of the 5 muscles in the rotator cuff and had dislocated my shoulder slightly. I made 2 or 3 office visits for about 3 weeks but haven't been back since. Surgery not indicated at this time. Yes, I am also a firm believer in chiropractic manipulation.

If I could afford it, I would go more often but my insurance doesn't cover it. I have a overall good feeling upon leaving the office. It could be addictive.

My DC and his son, also a DC, regularly hunt pheasants and geese on my property. We have become quite good friends. He bought a ranch and frequently seeks advise from me.

I visit the chiropractor as necessary.  I was in a car accident a few years ago (read my profile for the details) and I decided to visit a chiropractor after he came into our center looking for a house ball that would demonstrate the relative weight of the human head on the spine.  We got to talking and I told him about my accident and my frequent bouts with cervical neck pain.  He gave me a card and told me to come see him.

Well, about 2 weeks later I woke up and again found myself unable to turn my head.  After weeks of physical therapy, ultrasound treatments, massage therapy and doctor's visits I decided to give chiropractic a try.  Since the end of my regular treatments for the accident, I have only had one recurrence of the neck problem, and it was the direct result of playing basketball.

So, to answer the original questions:

1) I go to a chiropractor, so count me among the members that do.
2) I don't think it works, I KNOW it works.
3) I go because he is the only one who was able to reasonably treat me for my injuries with any significant results.

I am a firm believer.  I have degeration in spine and hip joints.  This can't be reversed, but when I first started going, I could barely walk a block.  M.D. says take ibuprofen.  I now can walk about a mile, and seldom take any pain medication.  I had one leg shorter than the other.  Now both legs are the same.  I go every 3 to 4 weeks.  Other things he has fixed, that M.D. said probably would need surgery were reverse bunion and knee pain.  He also adjusts my Chihauhau for free.(bad knees)

Yep I've used mine for hip and shoulder problems even a forearm injury.  Helps a great deal.  I have some old football related injuries and it helps with knees and feet.  About every six months is the usual.

I've gone for back pain relief. I helps a little, but I have never had the success that others have had. I stopped going a year ago. My back is better this year that last.

I see a chiropractor every day when I wake up and look in the mirror every morning. I resemble that remark, LOL

Hey ttforshort, Where do you live?  Maybe a could trade a hunt for geese and pheasants for some treatment if I could come on out to your ranch?

I have only gone once (about 15 years ago) and the guy damn near crippled me.

I had back trouble for about 10 years. Sometimes better than other but I always had a twinge in my back. Everyone kept telling me to go to a Chiropractor. I finally relented. X-ray’s showed I had a small hernia of a disk between L4 and L5. After a few “treatments” and adjustments I wasn’t feeling any different. In one last effort to treat me the guy got more aggressive with his adjustments. My back continued to hurt more and more the following days with pain radiating down my leg now. After 3 days I couldn’t stand or walk for more than a few minutes and my left leg was going numb.

I went to an orthopedic Doctor who suggested surgery but I held off a couple of days. The severe pain subsided but my leg was weak and I had little feeling in my foot. With some physical therapy I was able to get most of the strength back in a month but my toes still tingle.

I do daily exercises and stretches for the back and I have still avoided surgery although it still hurts from time to time.

Now I believe that there are cases where things get out of alignment and chiropractors can help for those cases.

I visit the chiropractor as needed.  The woman I go noe to has a different approach than any other chiro I've ever seen.  I think she's a witch.  Her diagnostic technique involves having me on my back with my arm raised.  Then she touches, very lightly, my upraised arm with her right hand, and (again lightly) places her left hand on various spots, all with her eyes shut.  She has yet to fail to diagnose the problem.  Her treatment technique does not involve forcible adjustments; she uses a variety of low impact techniques - galvanic (electrical) stimulation, very light spring-loaded hammer type blows, massage - stuff like that.  I've had chronic back problems for years (lower, for unknown reasons; upper since I came near to killing myself in a car 20 years ago) but she can always take care of the problems.

At one point, some months back I had to go to one like 2-3 times a week for about a month. I was so out of wack my back hurt allll the time and my neck hurt, and my spine was like bent forward (bad posture). It REALLY helped A LOT! I loved it, it felt so good getting cracked. I stopped going though, too expensive.

Pinbuster,
If you are still in some discomfort, may I make a suggestion?

Just like there are different philosophies of medical treatment, there are different philosophies of chiropractic care. I have been to 3 chiros in the past where I left the office - once after a very poor treatment, once before he touched me - just had a bad feeling, you know... And the third, wouldn't lay a hand on me until I'd purchased $200 of supplements.

So.... There's good ones and bad ones, just like in everything else...

Mumzie – The therapist had me start doing a series of stretches and exercises. I’ve always been pretty muscle bound and not very flexible. These take about 15 minutes to do and I do these 5 or 6 days a week.

In general, since do these I don’t have any constant pain. I still feel I have only about 70% of the strength in the leg and as I said my toes tingle, but it is enough I function ok.

If I had been doing these exercise before I probably never would have had a problem.

I have had a couple times since then that the disk(s) got irritated but with some ice and Ibuprofen I can get relief.

Bowling and golf are two of the worst things you can do for your back and I do both.

As I said I believe there are situations that Chiropractors can and should be used. It just seems the majority of people I know that go on a regular (weekly) basis are really going for a massage rather than a treatment of a particular condition.

Pinbuster - sorry to hear of your bad experience.  Back in August I threw my back out.  Turned out I had a disc bulge that was putting pressure on my sciatic nerve (this is what caused the pain shooting down your leg, most likely).  I couldn't walk across the room without hanging on to something!  I had gone to chiro's before, so I knew what to expect - and yes, I am convinced that in many instances they work well.  However, you do have to be careful, there are quacks in the chiro world just like there are MD's that don't know what they're doing.

Anyway, my point is, with the disc bulge, it took much longer to get the alignment to hold and for the disc bulge to recede than any other back problems I have had to date.  Actually, I started this season hardly able to bowl, and as of right now I am feeling better.  But, if I reach above my head and stretch (Found this out when reaching for something in the closet) I still feel a little twinge that will go down my leg - not excruciating, but noticable.  Currently we have reduced my treatment to once every 3 weeks, and I am seeing progress every week.  Hope you don't have any more problems in the future, but if you do I'd ask around for recommendations to a different chiro.
