Pitch
« on: March 29, 2004, 11:03:13 AM »
If the pitch of a thumbhole is wrong, how can it be corrected? When the thumbhole is drilled, I'm assuming the drill bit is at a 90 degree angle. Does the angle of the drill bit need to be adjusted? Can it be adjusted. I'm lost when it comes to pitch.

if you use slug, the slug can be drilled out, and reslugged and the pitch re-done differently....

To change the pitch of a thumb hole you have to slug or plug the hole and re-drill.

The proshop’s drill press will have a jig that holds the ball and allows the bit to enter the ball at different angles so all holes are not drilled at 90 degrees in fact few thumb holes are.

rlamanna -- The pitch can be created two ways.  On my press, an old AMF 3600 (sidewinder), the ball remains steady and the drill head is angled.  On the more modern presses, the drill head remains steady and the angle of the ball is changed by the ball-holding jig.  The other responders are right, once the hole is drilled, the only way to change the pitch is to either plug or slug and redrill.  --  JohnP
