What to Look at & When .....
« on: August 22, 2008, 10:48:15 AM »
Reading the thread titled "?" caused me to ask this question:

Are we NOT supposed to watch the ball hitting the pins? If not, how do we gauge pin reaction, ball track through the rack etc. etc.

I always thought you were supposed to watch the ball pass over your mark, get to the breakpoint and on into the pins.

If we post and keep looking at the mark long after the ball has passed over it (or at least close to it) what good does that do?

Or am I missing something huge?

If you are practicing hitting your mark, you want to keep your eye on the target, not the reaction point. Hence the ? post, I believe.

What I do is:

For the first couple of steps, I look at the pins, and my third step i look at the dots on the lane, my fourth step I look at the arrows, and my fifth step, I watch the ball until about halfway down the lane, and then I watch the ball hit the pins.

Looking at your target on the lane in the arrow area throughout your delivery stabilizes your movements. Once the ball passes the target, you are free to kove, since the ball is gone and you cannot alter its reaction anymore. Watching what the ball does on the lane at the breakpoint and/or in the pins  is essntial, though, to decide whether you had a good shot or need some delivery changes. But keep your eyes on the target as long as you are in your active delivery - it helps

Is there any advice how to concentrate on your mark while walking towards the foul line. I have always tried in practice or league to do it and the end result is I make worse shots than I would if I just go with my instinct of where to throw the ball to get me the best reaction. In other words I guess I'm what you'd call an area bowler but it has worked but I do notice on the flatter patterns one cannot rely on that and must be accurate.

Any helpful practice tips would be greatful.

I like to have a target at the arrows, and one at the breakpoint. Watching it go through the pins is also a good idea... entry angle, deflection, etc. can be helpful to the experienced eye.
One center I bowl in has an option of showing the ball going through the pins at slow-mo right on the console. It will repeat itself until another ball gets thrown.

I would say as a general rule of thumb, where you focus on the lane ultimately depends on where you want the break point of your ball. If you want a breakpoint that is later, further down the lane, then look further down on the lane (i.e. past the arrows). This would be useful for when the lanes break down and need a later breakpoint to compensate for the earlier rolling heads.

Also, don't neglect to watch your ball not only what board it crosses at the arrows, or where it is at the breakpoint, but watching it go through the pin deck is equally important. Keep an eye on what your ball does to the 8 and 9 pins. Basically a good driving ball should not deflect too much off of the 5 pin and split the 8 and 9 pins. If it is running over the 8 pin, then solid 9s and 4 - 9s may result and an adjustment is needed. Conversely, if you are leaving hard 10s, the ball may be deflecting too much off of the 5 and an adjustment is needed there as well. Of course this is for a righty, but the same applies for lefties, just on the opposite. Experience and practice go a long way and creating these habits don't occur over night. Just my 2 sense on the subject.

I think the concentration on the target has more to do with you being able to actually finish the shot.

If you are anything like a lot of wide recievers, for example, your mind has finished the shot before the ball is actually out of your hand and suddenly your focus is on the pins, and the shot goes errant.  Wide recievers often look toward where they want to run before the ball is even in their hands, and it bounces off their head or pads, though, in their minds, they've already made the catch.  The best ones watch the ball all the way into their hands, then move, rather than the other way around, like a bowler focused to make certain he's actually hit his target, then he's free to watch what happens at the pin deck.

In either case, you have to see what the ball does with your real eyes, rather than your mind's eye, and the target focus is nothing more than an aid to help you do it.
