Scorpion pattern again tonight...
« on: July 23, 2009, 02:49:30 AM »
After last week's debacle bowling on the Scorpion for the first time (I started with Break S-75, and never really got a good look with it until the 4th game...oil was long and heavy), I decided to bring some more aggressive equipment with me this evening.

I have several choices, but I was thinking of using the following.

AMF Mega Friction at 1000 to use during practice to burn it up a little and to use as long as I have a look with it.

Ogre Particle prepped with a grey scotchbright in the event the Mega-Friction burns up quickly, or if carrydown gets to be a problem.

Black Widow Bite prepped at 2000 to use after the pattern opens a little.

Epic Quest at 2000 if I can't control the Bite.

Neptune to use as my spare ball or in the event the pattern isn't as heavy this week. (The same pattern will vary a bit from week to week.)

Being a lefty I usually only have to make one ball change a night.  I'm just thinking out loud here...no need for input, unless you know something that I should be considering that I'm not.

Normally I'm not that concerned about how I do in this league...I'm just there to learn, but there's only 3 weeks left and my wife and I recently took over first place.  As I've been trying to convince her of the virtues of bowling ever since we got married 16 months ago, winning could really help get her on board.  She's pretty stoked we're leading the field.

I think the Mega and the Ogre are a good idea.

I see you said you were bringing more aggressive equipment out, well I don't think your Bite or Quest are going to be stronger than your S-75, but could be a good step down after whichever particle you use burns a whole.

I say take your Nkryption Code with you.

Don't be afraid to make aggressive moves with your feet to chase the oil.  For me, the Scorpion started off pretty tight, but really opened up a lot over the course of the night since the head oil disappeared pretty quickly.  I had to use a strong pearl (Gravity Shift) with surface playing in the track area, and inch my way left every couple of frames in search of fresh oil.  This helped me get the ball down the lane with enough energy to kick out the corners, and it left me with miss room to the outside, and good angle to trip the 4 when I missed left.

I agree. My best regional performance to date came on Scorpion. I had a nice look playing out with my Bite on the fresh before making a big jump inside and wheeling my N'Sane LevRg. As others have said, don't be afraid to make large moves inside as they start to open. If broken down properly, Scorpion can begin playing like a house shot. Look for your opportunities, and go get 'em.

Things went as planned, more or less.  During practice I could tell right away that the Mega-Friction wasn't going to work and put it up.  Started with the Ogre Particle and pretty quickly burned a track to bounce off of with the Bite or Quest.  Actually was getting my best look from the Quest most of the night, though once I jumped inside the Bite appeared to have more recovery.

I averaged around 180 (shot 197, 175, 171, & 188), which ain't bad for me.  (I really gotta work more on my spare shooting though...learned to shoot at the seven pin on a house shot and keep missing that bugger left on the PBA patterns.)

We won all 7 points again so the wife is happy.  Two more weeks on the Shark and the season's over, but they have another PBA league coming in the fall on Sunday nights.  Definitely going to have to join that one.
