What will they do this year?

Every year the bowling centers change the oil patterns last year for us it was short light oil in a flat block.  

What will do for the upcoming season?

I think it is a master plan with the bowling ball manufactures to help sell bowling equipment.  If last years balls don't work then we have to go buy new ones.

So what is your take?  More oil, less oil, longer oil, shorter oil.

I want to hear your thoughts.

Assuming that the local bowling center has not yet been converted to a pharmacy superstore , the shot will be the same as last year.  Why change anything when all you get is grief from bowlers who don't want to change anything, just want to stand in the same spot all night and throw strikes?

Due to a change in personnel at our lanes, the shot has changed.

The last three seasons, we have seen a longer, top hat pattern with
a flood in the middle. The new Op Manager has decided that scores were
too low and a different pattern would help.

This coming season, I see no change in equipment as I have lighter oil
covered well. Most of the house bowlers will not purchase new equipment.

BTW-The new shot is a medium length, Christmas tree pattern. Averages in
the house are already running 10-20 pins higher than previously.

This is the first time that I have experienced a wall. Instead of one or
two boards of area, I now have at least five boards.

As a veteran of many a second-shift campaign, I've found that the oil pattern is just one variable in the mix.  I'm less concerned about what they do to the pattern than I am with where our league will be bowling within the center and the type of league that will be on those lanes immediately before us.  The two scratch leagues that I'll probably have to choose from this Winter have both had five-member handicap leagues in front of them in recent years, but both leagues are considering moves to other parts of the center in order to increase the chances of starting on time every week.  So we'll just have to see...

my house has gone from a 42' blended pattern using kegel defense to a 44' blended pattern using kegel prodigy. they are also putting in new amflite pins. the carry will be tougher till the pins get broken in. prodigy is not suppossed to carrydown or breakdown as much---we'll see.

I agree with Pooter - who you follow on second shift determines the oil pattern for that night - far more than the lane man.
We started out last fall as the first shift - 7 pm. Then they get the zookeepers in (school bus driver league) - lots of plastic down the middle. Most of the guys in the scratch league were fine - they don't play straight anyway. I'm a lot straighter player than them - average dropped 7 pins...
fought all year, and got it back up after the early league stopped bowling. SAD...

Of course, it wasn't all their fault, but I find it remarkably coincidental that it was my high average for a while, then dropped to my lowest...

Something just doesn't mix with that kind of shot wear, followed by guys with the big hook crossing the lane.

My situation is much like what Sawbones described.  No one in the center is smart enough to change the pattern intentionally, but you get something different on a regular basis from malfunctions and lack of maintenance on the machine.
