should i play it that way?
« on: May 18, 2007, 02:32:57 AM »
now that the season is over, my sunday gold pin is a cash back league and i got the 20th place, yea kinda sucked

however, i think i did this in the wrong way

format: 2 player per team, high and low bowler, 2 teams in the pair, high vs high and low vs low (one individual point per person) and totals vs totals (one team point)

i started off my season with 160 avg that i carried out during summer league (nothing official). I was doing great till mid season, placed 2nd in points and getting about 6/8 points or more. Then problems started, we divide the high and low bowlers by their avg, if a high bowler is not doing good, and the highest avg low bowler has higher avg that him, then the low bowler becomes high bowler. Thats what happened to me, i averaged 190 by then and became the high bowler. I was excited cuz i did improve and a lot cuz i was throwing 800+ series (4 games) so it was going to be more challenge if i bowl against high bowlers.

After becoming high bowler, i just couldnt get my points, i cant recall any day that i got more than 4/8 points and since then it went downhill, 2 points, maybe 3, getting 4 and i was happy!

end of season i got $350 and the first place got about 650

i did good gamewise cuz i did better than ppl who have been bowling for years but moneywise i sucked!

was it a good idea to sandbag little bit and stay in the low bowler and get my points and therefore get more money back?

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

Personally I don't agree with sandbagging, but it happens and it is almost impossible to stop, ecspecially in money back leagues. Even being against it I know I have tossed a few because the game was over and geting more pins was self satisfaction...Now back to your question, I think you have to ask yourself one question...WHY do YOU bowl?....money? Fun? Friends? socially? then decide if the only reason you bowl is for money then sandbagging is probably going to be your answer, however if you enjoy it and take it seriously, maybe you will be good enough to be the high man and start gaining more points the "legit" way?
Just my 2 Cents..

I've never understood the sandbagging mentality. I have never and will never sandbag. I understand the personal satisfaction thing, and that's part of it for me, however, what if it comes to the end of the season and you lose something on pinfall by a handful?

You should be happy that you still received that much $ back (over 50% of the winner), while finishing in ~ 20th!  Sort of sounds like my mom's leagues (first place get $100, second place gets $97.50, third place gets $95... LOL).  As far as the total amount, I'm not even sure that our highest paying stratch league paid out that much $$$.

I second this 100%.  There have been times where I would not have been upset at throwing a series on the lower end, and of the two occasions that stick out, one I had my high series, and the other was very good for me.  I can't do it.  I may suck, but I always know I tried my best.

Sand bagging is never OK.  Did you really need to ask?
