i have actually been trying to do the same thing. a buddy helped me out. his advice was: hold the ball with my hand underneath and wrist straight at the pins, pinky tucked and index finger spread to the right. before i take my 1st step, i bend my wrist to about a 45* angle, my index finger is now almost pointing at the 7 pin, hand still underneath. just take a slow approach, when your thumb comes out 1st, your fingers will follow with a nice side roll. my follow thru consists of rolling my wrist to where my thumb touches my head on the right side ( right-handed ) about halfway back, almost like you were parting your hair with your thumb. with a nice deep knee bend and hold the pose after you release to make sure your balance is good. it took about 1 full game to get it all together, and i made a cheat sheet i look at before i bowl every time just as a refresher. my knee bend isn't all that good because i'm 56 yrs. old, but it increased my hook at least 5-6 boards. i throw 14# stuff so i have to go slow, but by pulling up all the way, i get great lift that i didn't have before. also, for spares or when the lanes start to break down, just point your finger at the head pin and that'll take some of the hook off. for the 10, i just use plastic and point my index at the 10 pin which puts my hand right underneath the ball with no hook. sorry for the long thread, didn't want to forget anything. lol.
