I agree with a few ... Jowdy, Hall, Ritger, my pro shop guy (Kudos on that one, Sandy) and one that has yet to be mentioned ... Thomas Kouros !!! Jowdy calls Kouros the best !!! Do yourself a favor and get his book, "Par Bowling: The Challenge". IMHO, one of the top three instructional book for our sport.

There are only about 5 people out there anyway.  And all of the people named here are old timers anyway.  Are there any young Guru's?  Funny how all of the leaders in this sport are old timers.   Maybe that's what bowling needs is some younger ideas and younger energy.  Younger folks can be Guru's, can't they?

I must say that Richard Wolfe has helped me tremendously.  Our first lesson was about 3 hours.  The first 2 hours not even throwing the ball, but at a table discussing the physics of bowling.  THEN, we transferred that knowledge to the lanes and worked on targeting (working with my approach and release at that time).  On subsequent lessons, we worked on releases and trajectory and timing, etc.

For those who don't know Richy, he's currently on tour - exempt, 49th I think.  Made a top 15 in the first half of this year and 18th last week.  He's got a very smooth, classic style delivery.  A real nice guy and very patient coach.

But those first two hours of my first lesson were just, well..., let's just say that I didn't expect a physics lesson in my bowling lesson.  But it sure did give me good understanding of ball/lane interaction and reaction before even hitting the lanes.

I must that I've never listened to anyone talk with such an understanding of the physical (and by that, I mean physics, not athletics) nature of the game.  Not even Dick Ritger, and I spent 4 days with him.  Oh, and Richy is a youngster.  Compared to me anyway.

Lessons from

Bill Taylor(he truly is a guru).
Mo Pinel
Del Warren
Dave Davis
Ron Clifton
Mike Nyitray

Videos from Dick Ritger

From hearing others talk.
Bill Hall(and seen the awesome style of Danny Wiseman)
Ron Hoppe(Mikas coach)

I believe that I have gained something from each!

The most important things that have anything to do with my occassional success in bowling have come from Bill Taylor and Dave Davis(keep ball next to slide foot at release less than 2 inches of space between ball and ankle).

Dick Ritger Tapes and Mo Pinel drillings.

Things that I have in my office that I always keep close at hand.

CD's on Ball Dynamics from Mo Pinel
Fitting and Drilling a Bowling Ball by Bill Taylor
Focused for Bowling by Dr. Dean Hinitz (autographed)
Secrets of the Big Money Pros by Fred Borden
Video tapes from Dick Ritger (they give me nightmares, and Dry the hand)
Dick is a lot better in person!!!  Guru is an understatement.  More bowling knowledge was handed to me in three days than you could possibly believe.  My personal number is 5!

Dick Ritger to unbelieving young student in class. "I only spent 20 years on the tour and won 16 titles, ABC, PBA Hall of Fame it works!"  and he is right!  Nothing replaces a good foundation.

A combination between Del Warren and Carol Norman really helped my game.
Ron Hickland is definitely interesting.  He's not an old guy.

I have had limited dealings with Richard Shockley, Rod Ross and Dr. Jeff Briggs all good.
