Switch Grip Installation
« on: August 10, 2009, 05:12:52 AM »
So I just got the materials to do switch grip. I do not have a plug cutter so I am using a router to file the outer sleeve down. What I have discovered is that it leaves a real rough top edge and its hard to get that down with a bevel knife. Does anyone use a router on this forum, if so please let me know how you do it. And also when doing a existing ball that has a 1 3/8 slug already I have found this to be difficult and chip at the the top edge of the ball when I go in with the 1 1/2 switch grip bit. Getting a lot of vibration any other tips would be great.

Thanks,

Sorry I don't have an answer but I would like to know what made you go to switch grip rather than the VISE IT system.

Invest in a plug cutter and check the speed of your press.  Too high of a speed might be causing the vibrations.

I cut Switch Outers down with a router sometimes too.  Speed is a little high, would actually melt the plastic a little.  I used a Dremel tool on the plastic to make it flush with the ball, and the the bevel sander.

Press speed could be a little high, but that is a BIG bit spinning in there, and if you are just shaving some slug out with the 1 1/2 bit, you probably will get some vibration/movement.

Also, I bought an 1 1/2 end mill from Turbo.  Cost about $150 if I remember correctly, but if you run this bit down through the hole after the 1 1/2 carbide drill bit, it will make the hole perfect all the way to the bottom.  The outer sleeve will slide in sweet, and you won't have as much problem with the inner sleeves not turning easily in the outer sleeve.  A wise investment for you in my opinion.

Be careful with the end mill, that is a big azzz bit, I used WD40 on it while drilling when it was brand new.  Almost too sharp.

Thanks for all the input everybody. Unfortunately my press is so old that I cannot adjust the speed so I will maybe tighten down more on the jig which is also old. No matter what I am not giving up I will beat this thing for sure. I have ordered a plug cutter for my press, should be here sometime next week so I hope this will help on getting the edge smoother.

Why in the world would anyone use a switch grip??? They suck...

I respectfully disagree.
I,and many of my team mates, have used the Turbo system for a few years on a number of balls.
We have not found any sucking issues in all that time.

Best plug cutter on the market...

I don't use the Switch grip because there are just too many variables...

I heard a story that I am not sure if it is true as it came from a 3rd party..

The Grip Loc that Lane#1 markets was supposed to actually be the Turbo Switch Grip but it wasn't completely perfected at the time and they didn't want to wait. With all the damage and cracking problems the Switch Grip has had since it's intro maybe they should have waited too. I just think 1 1/2" is too big a hole to be cutting into these multi density balls and table chatter is inevitable..

Just my opinion and I am sure the last ugrade to the Switch grip makes it just as good as all the others..
