Secretary fees
« on: May 25, 2012, 07:14:09 PM »
Is $4600 a lot for a 36tm league @ 36Weeks. Works up to almost $128 per week. Seems outrageous considering the house provides standing sheets and all.

I'm the secretary/treasurer for my Thursday nite league.  I get $50/team.  So my first year we had 18 teams, I got $900 at the end of the year, this past season we had a couple teams drop out, we had 14 teams so I got $700

Okay, I looked up the recent league rules (found them on leaguesecretary.com) and it seems that I was wrong about the secretary fees.  One league it is $0.65, another $0.70 and last is $1.00 per bowler per week.  In the first two, there is also a donation to the youth leagues of 0.10 and 0.30 per bowler per week.  I knew what the lineage and prize funds were, so I assumed that the difference was the secretary fee but did not know about the youth donation.  League fees per week is $16, $15, and $10.

I've paid around .50 to $1.00 on leagues. Some of the other prices your talking about is fk'n insane and unnecessary.

It may be insane and unnecessary.  But if you are paying .50 to $1.00 and your league is like his, 36 teams of 4 for 36 weeks, you would be paying between $2592.00 and $5184.  Now just who is insane?

Some depends on what all the secretary duties are.

I'm in one league that you bowl team points (5 person teams) but also they track how many points you have won against the other teams individual bowlers (handicap). So you can win up to 20 points a night.

That is alot of work each week for the secretary to figure out each bowlers points won and track those standings.

I'm not sure but I believe that secretary gets .35 a night per bowler.

But if you think it is high then either run for secretary or try to change the rule.

I do not know off any secretary that still does it by hand.  I am sure some still do but like I said most do it with a computer.  I did for over 10 years by hand and you are right, it is a lot of work and it was only for a 16 team league.

I did it for about 5 years with a computer and had it done is less than 1 hour where as before it took me days (part time at night).  I believe most secretary programs can do points and various ways of displaying them.

So what I am saying is that if your secretary uses a computer, its not hard or time comsuming and I am not sure why some of you folks are paying them so much.

Like I said, $4600 is way too much to pay.

Let me say this....GROW UP!!! That is too all the people complaining about the fees being too high. Second thing I will say is this: Take the job next year if you think this is an outrageous fee. As one poster said, anyone who has done it, has never complained again, computer or no computer.

I have always seen secretary fees to be between $0.50 and $0.75 per bowler per week. Bowl_Freak, your figures work out to be right around that figure depending on how many bowlers were on a team. Not outrageous at all. If you feel this is a little too high, you can bring it up in the league meeting next year. I bet you will get pushback though and as I said earlier, if you feel this is too much, take the job next year and see if it feels like it is too much for what you do and put up with.

Yeah $5,000 to do paper work is something we all should grow up and stop complaining about.

Why don't we all just drop our pants more and let people give it to us.   Please...

Heck I will do every single league in the center for $4,000 a league, how about that discount!

You gotta be out of your mind stupid to think $5,000 to do simple paper work (yes I have done it and it's SIMPLE with a computer) is justified.

You must be bowling for $100 a man, because there can't be any prize fund in these leagues at that rape rate.

You see this in leagues from time to time, the officers of the league just sticking it to the bowlers and the bowlers just saying...oh ok.

I am getting into this discussion late.  Did the secretary also serve as treasurer?  If so, then what comes out to .71 per bowler per week is not out of line.  The leagues I bowl in range from .55 for secretary duties only to .70 for combined duties.

The first night of league we give $5 a person for the fee. The scores are downloaded from the lane consoles and there isn't anything much to do for inputting the scores. When you set the league up you input all the info about the league and points and the software does the work for you! Actually most bowling centers do this work for the secretary/treasurer and all they do is collect the money! Just my $.02, Bruce

12 x,
I'm guessing you are just cheap. Bet you buy everything at the dollar store too, don't ya. It has been said many times in this post, the amount is consistent with what most others are seeing. I have lived and bowled in multiple states and have seen the Sec fees ( in response to Fluff,  I have never seen a Sec and a separate Treasurer, it is always been one job) range from $0.50 to $075 over the years....in line with what Bowl_Freak is seeing. Not once have I seen or heard anyone complain like you and a few others on here. No one cries and whines about it or feels like they are getting ripped off.....just you. I know a great way you can stop paying Sec fees.....stop bowling. The last thing this sport needs is a whiner like you....next thing you'll be complaining about the shots being too hard because you can't miss your mark by 5 boards on either side and still strike.

$5000 is insane.  I think my main league is around $500 for each the secretary and treasurer.  4 person teams, ~15 teams, 30 weeks.  Amounts to about $0.25-$0.30 each.  Adding more teams, bowlers, weeks don't add a linear amount of work though, so it seems pretty trivial to calculate is as an amount per bowler per week.

But we are more of a low maintenance league.  Center management is good, bowlers are mostly paid up on time.  If you have a lot of high drama people and crappy management then I suppose it would be worth more, but I would just join another league if that was the case.

I'm also in a work league, 3 man teams, ~10 teams, ~12 weeks.  Three people (myself included) split the work and do it for free.

One word to stay to you Jorge and that is SUCKER.   That's about sums it up.   $5,000 to do paper work that I can do in less than an hour is absoultely positively the biggest rip off I've ever heard of in the this great game.

$5,000 of YOUR PRIZE FUND.  THAT'S RIGHT..YOUR MONEY goes to doing paper work.

Everything is computerized,  you input the scores into the league program.   There is nothing here that is overly difficult at all about doing this.   Other than the expenses of buying the program (which the league should do for the secretary if the secretary agrees on doing this for multiple years),  the small amount of time to input scores/paper work and the paper and ink costs, what exactly here is worth $5,000 in your opinion??

If you think that is totally acceptable, I got a bridge and some beach front property to sell you.

The problem is idiotic people like you Jorge who think it's perfectly acceptable to rip off the bowlers and make money off of doing paper work.   Your the problem my friend.  Unfortunately these stupid people get in leagues where they can do this, and everybody just plays the sheep role.  Normally these people are all officers of the league, best buddies and if anyone protests to whats going on, they are told to leave.   Things just keep going the same way while the officers bowl for free, and skim off of the prize fund for their "services".   Most people are afraid of tipping over the apple cart, and just do what you tell them to do.

Somebody should step up and say they will do the work for $2,000 and let's see how huffy and puffy the secretary gets over that one.

The league officers should get to bowl for FREE the entire season,  that is their reward for being an officer and doing the paper work.  It should be free bowling and the cost of supplies and that is it.   They should not profit above and beyond that.   Your secretary gets $5,000 and then gets to also profit from the league prize fund.   Who the hell wouldn't want to do this, it's high way robbery at it's best.

In this situation the secretary is getting to bowl for free (the $5,000 covers his bowling fees).   The remaining money minus expenses makes them without question a profit from their "services"  and they also get to profit from prize fund.    Win, Win, Win... what a scam.

How much are you ripping off your league for?...Shhh we will not tell anybody

That is very rare now a days. It's nice to see that there are leagues out there that have multiple members willing to take on the responsibility of running the league. Makes it a better league.

In my association with all leagues it is basically one person running the show. I call it the Secretary/Treasure/Prize Setting/Banquet Organizer/President/Find a Sub for Me position (Yeah we have a President, a VP,  Sgt of Arms, and a Prize Committee but they do nothing.) I don't know how it got this way in my area but that's how it is.

Talkin' Trash!

If the league is paying $128 a night for the secretary fees,   at worst it would take somebody with very little computer know how 2 hours to in put the scores.

So at $64 an hour to put scores into a computer is a good deal to everyone?
