knee pain! cuz of shoes??
« on: February 18, 2007, 01:12:03 PM »
i was bowling today, nothing special or weird

after 3rd game, i start feeling little bit weird on my knee. on one shot, which i let it go normally, i walked back and suddenly i felt a drop on my knee. i had problems then playin the 4th game but i still managed to have a good game. However, the approach was messed up since i couldnt finish the way i usually do and more of the time losing balance. the same in 5th game which i did ok except missing a 4 pin

after that, i went and put my normal shoes on, and i was totally recovered! tried to put some weight on the knee and it was perfect! i thought it was something mental. my friend and i went to buy a pizza and we ate it at his place, after that we went back to the alley, he's sons were bowling. i changed to my bowling shoes since i wanted to give the kids some advice. The weirdest thing happened then! i started feelin the pain again!

now my question is, is this even possible? or just coincidence?

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one

Simple answer is yes, shoes can effect one's knees. I'm feeling it today from wearing a pair of athletic shoes that are past their prime while doing clean-up over the weekend.

When did you last change your shoes? If old, time for new. If new, are they a different brand or style? Not all shoes are alike even if they "fit."

Yeah I feel pain everytime I bowl in my knees and ankles, and I know its because of my shoes. I have a pair of athletic shoes from Dexter that were $40. When starting out, you dont know how important shoes are, you just want shoes of your own. Im ordering some Caddy's this weekend!

I would have had to stop bowling if it weren't for the red leather heel that I got for my sst 6s.

I had the same problem where the end of every night I would get home and my knee & hip would be killing me. As the season progressed the pain started to get worse, and carry over from just the night of league into the next few days.

I was at wits end, someone suggested that it might be the shoes. I got a pair of sst6's and never looked back. It's done wonders for me.

So, I have hardcore knee pain everytime i bowl.  I had a old pair of dexters that were worn out so i picked up a new pair of curts.  Its a little better now but is there sumthing that i can glue or somehow put on that rubber heal?  I have lots of fluid build up now because of this stress to my left knee!  Any help would be greatly apprieciated!
Thanks!

I never had knee problems on wood approaches, but these synthetics kill me!  Even with SST6's and Roos adjustable systems (which make it more tolerable) I still cannot bowl 2 nights back to back anymore - otherwise I have real bad knee pain on the 2nd night.  In fact, I avoid bowling with less than 2 off days between sessions.

To be honest, I haven't bowled the last 3 weeks due to weather shutting down our league, and I'm liking the fact that my knees haven't been bothering me.  I might have to take up billiards instead...

WOW, thats exactly my same situation.  I bowl in a thur night league.  And because of my schedule i have been practicing wed nights.  I just cant do it anymore.  I basically need that whole week to rest my knee just to bowl for league.  LOL, i know what you mean, I have been thinking about taking up pool as well.  Have been just taking a beating!

You could try cutting one of the red leather heels down to fit the heel of your shoes. But then you might run into conditions where that is too slick.

Maybe only put it on the front 1/2 of the heel & leave the rubber exposed on the back 1/2 I dunno.

The way I see it, my SST6s cost less than a new bowling ball, and all the bowling balls in the world wont help your game if you cant bend your knee.

It's money well spent.

I did the same thing as Bjaardker suggests until I boiught my DynaRooz and an adjust-a-heel.  That helped a lot because I slide flat footed.  Not having the rubber on the front of the heel has helped me have a more consistent slide.  The other thing I've done is slow down my footwork and concentrate on developing a free armswing.  With the slow footwork and the freer swing, I don't have the problem with my knees anymore and I can now throw the ball as hard as before - but with much more control.

But back to the original post, if you're having knee pain just walking around in your shoes, its time for a new pair, maybe some insoles or both.

I bowl with knee pain daily i have to use the number 8 sole and the red heel, when i go to a regular heel it is pain for 3 days. The tri heel is almost as good because of the changes in surface but the good ole red heel is still the easiest to live with. On wood approaches i will sometimes go with the tri heel over the red, depends on how the knee feels that day. Lately i have been wearing my full knee brace with metal hinges, i cant wait until warms up enough to lose that piece of junk.

My 'Roos have that rubber triangle in the middle of the heel which would make cutting down a leather sole for the heel not fit well (the rubber piece would still stick out like a brake).  Guess I could take a knife and slice that little piece off... I might have to look into some modifications.

I used the leather heel trick with the SST's I used to have, but still had some knee pain.  Maybe I'm just falling apart?

They make a product for the 'Roos called the Adjust-a-heel.  Here's a link
