Semi-Roller
« on: December 26, 2003, 01:35:55 AM »
I've been trying to throw a semi-roller instead of a spinner. I've always wondered how one can throw a semi-roller. So if you think you can help me. Then please reply to this question. Thanks!

BornToBowl -- Hard to tell without being able to see you throw the ball, but I'll try.  Most people that throw spinners turn the ball by rotating the arm from the shoulder.  To raise the track to three quarter, allow your hand and wrist to rotate naturally through the release without rotating from your shoulder.  --  JohnP

As JohnP said it is hard to tell without seeing you.

A lot of spinners top the ball. They start their turn to early in their down swing. The thumb will stay in until it is well on the left side of the ball. When the thumb finally clears the fingers are on the outside of the ball at 3 or 4 o’clock with the bulk of the pressure on the sides of the fingers and not on the front pads. The ball then goes down the lane spinning like a top in it’s worst form.

As others have stated to raise the track you need to delay the turn and keep the hand behind the ball. To unlearn the early turn it will actually probably feel that your are holding your hand open thru the follow thru. Keep your thumb at 1 or 2 o’clock until it is beside your leg then rotate your arm from the elbow (don’t chicken wing it) and get your thumb to about 10 o’clock and feel the fingers lifting up the back of the ball, you will wan the pressure to be on the finger tip pads not towards the side of your finger tips.

This can be taken to far too where you will quite turning the ball and almost all the hook but while you are learning it would be best to try and get to the other extreme.

Also a high track with too much hit up on the ball is not good either on today’s conditions.
