Seminar with a pro
« on: June 17, 2008, 12:11:13 AM »
Our local association is working to get a national pro to come give a clinic.  We've never had any kind of event like that, but I've seen quite a few postings here about so-and-so doing coaching clinics at their house.

For those who have put on a clinic like that, what kinds of formats have worked well for you?  How much did you charge?  How many sessions did you have?  Did you work out a deal with the house to get blocks of lane time or just pay per-game lineage?  Anything else?

This past Saturday we had Randy Pedersen do a clinic at MacDill AFB. THe cost was $10.00. This included everything. Basically the lineage was covered by the $10.00.

He talked awhile and then everyone went out onto the lanes and bowled. Randy walked the lanes and helped people, threw some shots and then at the end of it Randy paired off with my son and bowled against myself and a friend of mine.

We just had 1 session and people filtered in as the day went on. Basically I went to the manager and told her about what I was trying to do. She then emailed Randy and worked out a date.

One thing I can say is that Randy did not push people into buying a new ball. If someone asked, he would give them his opinion on a ball or two, but not once did I hear him tell someone that they needed a new ball.

While something like what was described above is nice, I think it depends on what you are looking to accomplish. If you want something for youth bowlers and some adults, the open clinic is a good way to do it. If you are looking for a pro to come and help people improve their games, then I think one-on-one sessions are better. When I lives in CA, our pro shop used to get Bill Hall to come out every 6-8 months. He would charge $100 for an hour lesson and he worked with you one-on-one, used video and comparisons to pros and such. Similar to what Mike Jasnau does at Nationals. When Bill would come he would also do group stuff as well. He would arrive and do private lessons Thursday and Friday, then do group lessons Saturday and Sunday, and it was always sold out. If you didn't get your name in within about a week of the announcement, you would be SOL. Unfortunately Bill is now doing some coaching in the Middle East so he isn't available, but their are others who would do something similar.

And just an FYI, for those that don't know him Bill Hall used to coach Norm Duke, Danny Wiseman and a few other exempt players and is a monthly contributor to Bowling This Month magazine.

Contact Jeff Carter. He does these clinics already.

Used to work with Bill Hall but he as Jorge300 said in the middle east, he has a friend that is teaching at Super School this year named Bill Holt.

Bill Holt is a great coach not a big name guy but uses Hall's and his own methods, if you contact Bowling this month magazine i am sure they will get you his contact info. I am sure Bill Holt will come out for a clinic and you will be getting a coach that is top notch.

Sam Baca is another lesser known great coach he is from California but does travel once in awhile for clinics. He is a national tour winner from the 1970's and is a founder of Legends bowling ball company. I have heard they do package deals that include a ball with the coaching, usually it is Borden who does those clinics.

In the East, Bob Learn is doing clinics with a girl from Virginia named Laurie ??

She arranges everything and it is about $75 to $90 depending on whether video or not!  Bob is great easygoing, good technique tips, and is teaching sort of the modern method of starting body position and push away.

If he is any indication it works....he still throws it GREAT!

We have already started talking to someone in particular.  I was looking for some tips about what types of formats and prices y'all had.  We're trying to get the youth involved and I think this will be primarily for the youth but there are some older bowlers that would be plenty interested.  I was thinking of maybe a morning and an afternoon group session.
