Seminar with Coach / Author Bill Taylor
« on: November 03, 2004, 11:35:17 AM »
I have an opportunity to take a three day seminar with Coach / Author Bill Taylor.  I know that he writes monthly articles for BTM and is/was a great teacher. My question is how much in tune is he with modern technology?  Has anyone taken any lessons from him or been to one of his seminars? If so, what did you think? I don’t read most of his articles they seem to always talk in the past, like the 1950’s or so! Anyway, would it be worth it to invest $180.00?

Any Knowledge can be good if You realize all styles can work.....Bill Taylor is very smart,But also eccentric....In 1972 He told Me my arm hard a physical bend in it & I should consider surgery if I was serious about being an elite bowler....Well that "pissed Me off" & I want on to over 50 Honor Scores on My own & help from others....Maybe He has mellowed some today....But in 1972 He was a brash outspoken "know it all" & only His way was right....Then He also taught hitting up on the ball,But in His defense just about all coach's taught that in 1972....He also told Me Mark Roth would never make it because He did everything wrong.... Bill Taylor did His best work in Bowling Ball Fitting techniques....But I can think of dozens of better coach's today.

Berreez,

I have not personally attented one of his seminars... but I think from all the reviews I have read here have been on the negative side. Sure there have been positive ones as well. Most of the negativity comes from having to many students and him not spending enough time individually with the students.

His bowling theories seem extreme as far as I know about them. However, I dont necessarily disagree with them either. I am open minded enough to understand that there is many ways to look at everything. His approach to solving them come simply and purely from studying the human body's skeletal structure.

I am incredibly interested in attending one of his semiars. One reason is to be evaluated but more importantly to get to know him. He certianly is an athourity of bowling on many levels and to see him as only a couch is limiting what he has to teach. His stories is his way to teach you something more about bowling than just the mechanics.

I certianly share his concern about the state of the bowling industry. And I would love to learn and understand all he has been furtunate to learn in his lifetime about bowling.

I took a BT seminar over SuperBowl weekend 2004.  The house signed up too many students to allow BT to give enough time to each during the scheduled time slot.  Unfortunately, I was one of the students that got almost no time from him.  Fortunately, he knew that and spent the lunch break working with me one on one.

It took three weeks for me to get comfortable with the changes he prescribed.  But after that third week I averaged 211 for the next 6 months (my average had been 194 pre-seminar).  Then, I injured my sliding heel and achilles tendon, could not bowl for 3 weeks and did not practice for 2 months and I lost the feel somewhat.  I am now right around 200 but starting to get the right feeling back again.

I know he is supposed to be in my area again in mid November and I am going to try to corral him for a tune-up session or two.

My recommendation, go for it IF there is no more than one student for every scheduled half hour of the seminar.  I am pretty sure that they are limiting the number of registered bowlers now because he held a seminar in San Diego not long ago that was student limited.  Of course, they may not be doing that everywhere so get a definitive answer from the house and ask for your money back if you show up and there are more people than your answer indicated.

Thanks everyone for the input. The dates are mid December near KC (Raytown, MO). I've signed up. I let you know how it goes.

Don't worry about his stamina - he went for two days straight during my clinic and he is as strong as an ox (and will tell you at least one story to back up that claim).

I had to cancel!

I received some FREE tickets to the KC Chiefs vs Denver game. So I took my wife there instead. It was only 11 degrees (-2 wind chill) when the game started.

KC won 45 to 17.
