Setting a lineup 5 man team ...
« on: November 15, 2010, 02:16:25 AM »
Question,
We are not taling a mixed league, or fun league, but a pretty competitive handicap league, what is the best way to set a your lineup, so it be as easy as by average in ascending order, or is there a science in the best way to optimize you chance of winning. It is a 90% of 210 handicap league. just want to hear some of the better teams thoughts. We pulled cards at the beginning of they year, now, we have settled in with our averages, and I dont think this is right to start the second third, I believe it should be with averages and other factors in mind.

cc I understand your point .. but if you had the weakest man in the LAST POSITION and the HEAVY HITTER in the 2nd position .. wouldn't you expect the results to be the same? Only difference is that the scores would be in different slots!

No. Our anchor man is always confident, and has icewater in his veins. However, he likely would not have struck out in the second slot, simply because of the lack of intense pressure. For sure, there anchor man having to beat our anchor man in the tenth frame to win the quarter, 500 bucks, and a chance at 7000 bucks in the roll off made us odds on favorite because our anchor man is known to make the big shot. The girls on our team call him cool breeze. He goes up, throws the first strike, comes back gives me a high five and says, "hey dog, you know how we do, walk wit your cock out." The other team's anchor goes up and chokes.

This our line up

1. 222 Strong gets the game going throws a lot of strikes fair with spares
2. 196 consistent doesn't get into trouble
3. 217 Hit or miss but puts up huge games
4. 235 strikes all day and best spare bowler great set up man
5. 230 has everything strikes, spares and is fearless
We are in the top 3 in every category each year and have a lot of fun together, we don't even pay attention to the other team we just bowl.

A lot of this does matter on the league setup.

Out league has some good, strong teams and the typical order is 1st and 3rd depend on who is there.  I almost always have a lady in #2 and 4th and 5th are the same if both are there.

As a matter of fact, went into City and State before for many years and though I had some higher average bowlers on the team, I still had the same 3rd, 4th and 5th because we bowler for 6-7 years together and the continuity and flow was always there.

Last thing.....try any strategy you want against some of the teams we have that (a) have a low to high average of 79-125....or 93-137 and then a high man of 207....or 108-140.  No matter where you put them, it's really not going to matter playing point because any one of the low average bowlers can throw a 90 and pop out that unexpected 180 game at any time.

We frequently play 5 man teams in league, and most attention on the 1st and 5th player. Both should have a high average - the 1st one should be a kind of pacesetter, and it can be helpful if you have an outgoing character in that position who will pull the team with him/her and put some pressure on the opponents.

Last player should be mentally tough and experienced, beyond having a high average. I think that this toughness is even more important - we often have senior players in this position!

If we have a weak player, we normally place him/her on third position, and the rest is filled up with the rest.

Tom Kouros did an article on this.

Leadoff-Most versatile.  Highest or second highest average on team.
2nd-Next to lowest avg. on team.
3rd-Lowest avg. on team.
4th-Set up man.  Highest or second highest avg. on team.
Anchor-Most clutch.  Not highest avg but will get three in the tenth or make the single corner pin spare to win the game.

Can't go wrong with this setup.

+1, just saw it too late... (see my previous post)
