Setting Goals for the Coming Season
« on: September 27, 2004, 04:16:27 AM »
I've become such a bad spare shooter, I'm starting to become afraid of them. Borderline panic attacks when I have to shoot a corner pin.  Confidence is everything.  My strike game is great, I can bang away at my a-game forever, who can't?  I'm pretty solid at playing angles and moving all over the lane. I'm even confident in my wrist positions, being able to delay hook or bring hte break point in.

But damn them spares to hell!

So.... my personal goal is to greatly improve my spare game.  I know of a couple spare shooting games/programs to help during practice.  Just time to hit them.

What are your goals?

Tony

Tony I'm right with you on that one! My spare game is crap, it never WAS good to begin with! My goal for this season is to average 180 or better, simply by making my spares. Its so hard on those off days, when the spare ball just shoots off your hand every which direction, just not at the pin(s) Im trying to get! Its funny though because one day, I can feel like I could pick up anything I leave, and the next day I feel like I couldnt keep a ball on the lane if I tried! As said in someones sig before, "Im very consistent, consistently bad"

I blew my season goal last week but I'm still trying anyway.  I set my goal at not shooting anything under 570.  Last week I went 565 or something like that.  Most of my problems are just mental breakdowns in the game and I'm working on that.  Post bowled last night and went 627 and then during league shot 636.  Totally two different shots at opposite ends of the house.  It's only the second time I have bowled at this center in many years. The 565 was at my normal center.  If you don't set some kind of goals there is nothing to strive for to make you better.

Three goals,...1. Stop changing balls SO fast..make adjustments on the lanes, and not in the bag. 2. Bowl clean games,..opens are inevitable,..but I want to be more aware of trying not to open each and every game...3. use my spare ball more often, not just at the ten pin.

Tony, like you, my current goal is to greatly improve my spare game.

I'm using one of the approaches described by Susie Minshew in Dean Hinitz' book.  You shoot all your spares straight at the key pin, using the same target on the lane, and move your feet left and right to adjust the shot.

I think she recommends using 4th arrow as your target, but I prefer 3rd arrow, 'cause with my extreme right eye dominance, 4th arrow appears to be too far to the left of center for me to be comfortable using it to shoot left-side spares.

Goals for the season:

Avg 210 in my Thursday league
Avg 210-215 in my friday league (easier house)
Shoot at least one 300
Try to get an 800
Win both leagues (team player)

In practice sessions:

Spare shooting- needs to always improve and learn to use plastic on all spares, not just cross lane at "left side" spares.
Multiple lines/angles- can play inside a little and outside a little, need to be able to do both at any time
Footwork- need to improve on walking a straight line instead of drifting one way or the other half the time.

If all works out, I'll be able to do all by this next summer and maybe be a decent bowler....if not I'll keep trying and continue drinking beer...

My goals were:

Averga 175 in my SPORT League
Average 205 in my Thursday League
Shoot a 2nd 300
Shoot 800

Right now I'll settle for:

Convincing the house owners around here that there is no oil embargo so I can use more than my Monsters Inc ball. If things keep up I guess my goals will be:

1. Average 200 by working on my spare game
2. Have some fun...cannot bowl seriously with such lane conditions.

My Goals:

1.  Average 200+ in my sport league.
2.  Average 225+ in my THS league.

I will accomplish the above by:

1.  Making all of my single pin spares.
2.  Making better decisions on the lane as far as speed, release and ball choice.

Stay alive.

No injuries during the season.

Have fun while bowling.

Don’t be bullied by the kiddies, I’m getting old and frail.

Goal 1: to shoot 600 in my sport league
Goal 2: to make the cut in a PBA regional.  Cashing is all well and good (I've already done that), but the guys who make the cut...they're something.

My goals are spare conversion over 90% (excluding splits) and 82% overall.  Second goal is to average 215+ on THS, and 190+ on Sport.  If I do all those, I will try a few regionals.

1. Start making more spares. I was so solid this summer on my spares, but as college starts up, i have less time for practice. My strike game is amazing right now, but my spares are lacking.
2. Win my wednesday scratch league
3. Win or do decent in my saturday 4 man league
4. Average 220+ in saturday league, 230+ in wednesday league
5. Win at least 1 or 2 tournaments this year.
6. Win cities all around, i won it 2 years ago but didnt bowl last year
