Setting the ball down..
« on: February 25, 2009, 05:20:16 PM »
Recently I've gotten back into bowling, which I can thank my friend for getting a job at a center, and the quarter games.
I'm still working on trying to set the ball down nicely, and cut down on any loft I have whatsoever. What would be a good way of trying to practice this? The whole "try to throw it at your feet" thing, or is there a secret that's been kept from me so I can be the butt of everybody's jokes when I end up breaking my ankle from the impact of the bowling ball?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Let the ball go. As a benchmark, your thumb should exit the ball before it passes your sliding foot's ankle - when you keep your upper body quite upright.
But unintended loft can have different sources, e .g. the thumb hole size (toob or small), general timing or your body posture at the foul line. A video of yours would help

I would say instead of thinking of throwing the ball think that you are rolling the ball. Get that into your mind and just go up and be relaxed. That should help alot.

Make sure you have a good, snug fit on your thumbhole...then focus on not gripping the ball throughout the entire swing.  I'm just learning how to do this myself.

If you watch PDW and Jeff Carter in the plastic ball tounament this past weekend you'll see great examples of what happens when you don't grip the ball.  Watch their hands as they follow through...they're open and the thumb is pointing towards the sky.  This "open hand" usually only happens when the hand is somewhat relaxed and not gripping the ball (don't forget to keep your wrist firm).  I even go as far as trying to force my hand open a little during the swing to insure my thumb comes out of the ball cleanly.
