Setup - ball in ceneter or to the side
« on: September 15, 2003, 02:46:40 AM »
Anybody ever get conflicting info from different coaches....

Unfortunately happens all the time.  Anyways, current coach believes the setup should begin with the ball in the center of the body.  The coach shows that by opening the body, the ball can pass by. The coach claims I can get out of the ball easier this way.

To me this seems backasswards, and requires contortions that would be compeletly unnessary if one just kept the ball close to the side.

Looking for opinions from the more "technique" oriented bowlers.

Thanks,
Scott

I agree with Ragnar.  All of the articles I have read say to start with the ball on the side of the body so that it can clear the hips and maintain a relaxed pendulum swing.  Starting the ball in the center of the body would cause the ball to swing out and away from the body in the backswing and then when it came forward, it would go across the body and to the left (if you were RH).  But maybe there is a new teaching method out now?

I am going to really mess you up LOL.
I have different bowlers use different starting points because everyone has a different shape to their armswing. I try to use an armswing that is most natural to the player that will still put the ball on the path I want.

Another reason to change the starting position is bowlers often push one way or the other without knowing it. They "think" they are pushing straight ahead but they are not. Then again because everyone don't have the same flexibility in the shoulder I sometimes have to ask the bowler to hold or push the ball in a different place than would seem correct.

I am sure that every coach has a place where he starts bowlers out, I do too.
But more often than not I end up changing it a little for each bowler.

Now to really blow your mind
The best starting position-stance-pushaway-armswing..... for you today may not be the same for you in 6 months.
Bowlers, balls, lane oils and patterns all change over time.
It can be very hard for a bowler to keep up with all these changes on his or her own. That's what makes a good coach worth his weight in gold.
Bowl great!

The late Bob Summerville did an extensive study on the biomechanics of bowling and staying balanced through out the swing. He ran the results in BTM over a 3 or 4 month period about 5 years ago before he passed away. In the articles he stated that the ball should be started over the right foot, since that is essentially where it will finish. He advised of a stance in where the weight of the ball is shared with the left hand and the bowling arm elbow is at the bowler's side. This places the ball infront of the bowler's chest, and can be swung straight from there without a loop in the swing. These articles were very informative, they went step by step showing where a person's center of gravity is on every step and what causes shifts in weight and counter balances to the ball in the swing to help stay balanced.

I have had Ron (Magic Carpet) Clifton Coach me and he has basically had me set up the same way and for the same reasons, this doesn't mean that he sets everyone up the same as he stated above. By setting up this way it helps me keep the ball closer to my sliding foot on release, and more balanced.

The point is when someone says "set up with the ball info of you", they don't necessarily mean with the ball infront of your belly button, but infront of your bowling side pectoral.

If you have a chance to have Ron Coach you, I would highly recommend it. Like Ron says "you don't know what you don't know". I can't wait till the end of the month when I get to have him coach me again, as I am in a terrible slump.

quote:
Its easy to hold the ball in front of you either centered or just slightly rt of center for a  right hander.  The wt of the ball is more evenly balanced between both hands.  Then as one starts the pushaway, they push the ball upward and to the right so the downswing is now at the side of the bowler and as one takes the second step, the hip is cleared allowing a pendulum swing.

This is what works well for me.
