Shadow Bowl
« on: February 16, 2011, 07:02:17 AM »
Just curious how many of you have league practice sessions WITHOUT pins.  When I lived on Long Island, I remember quite often shadow practicing.  I always preferred it that way.  It made me more conscious of my target and release, as well as getting in more shots.  Seems nobody around here does that anymore (SW VA).  Does anyone still practice this way?.  I think next year, I will bring it up during league meeting and see what kind of response and feedback there is.

AMF pinsetters were the only ones that would do that as far as I know.

I didn't mind it as well, but I haven't seen it done for about 20 years around here.

I'm thinking that since the desk and computers control the pinsetters, that this is just a command or software prompt to leave the setters up and practice without the pins.

One good thing  about shadow bowling is you get more practice/warmup shots. here they only give you 10 minutes of warmup before league starts. But they don't shadow bowl so you only get a couple of shots on each lane.

I remember an old story about Earl Anthony.    Before he came on tour he worked nights at a warehouse.   When he got off he would go to a local AMF house, pay 5-10 cents a game  and bowl  without pins for hours, everyday.   He didn't care about pin fall, all he was doing was grooving his approach and delivery.

Agreed that its good for that purpose (such as getting loose for league) but when you're warming up for league you're usually trying to find a line to play for the night.

In centers where the pinsetters act like it's a normal frame during practice, I'll throw a shot without a full rack of pins without even thinking twice. I'm not trying to strike until the very end of practice -- it takes me 10 minutes just to get loose enough to pry the ball off my hand and even come close to hitting my target. Why do I need pins to do that?

On the other hand, every single other person in my leagues needs to always have a full rack of pins and will waste precious warmup time resetting. I need to throw as many shots as I possibly can just to get warmed up, stop wasting my time!!

One of the reasons for the "shadow "bowling had to do with purchase or lease agreement with AMF. The center paid a certain amount per line. The shadow feature saved the centers money and that's why you had shadow bowling vs throwing at pins

I'm on Long Island and they still do it in some leagues. You can get much more practice in that way.

I always hated no having pins to throw at.  You could say it looks like a good shot, but with no pins

there, you don't know for sure if it would have been light, heavy, or flush.  With 10 mins of

practice in our 5 man league, I get plenty of practice.  I can throw up to 10 strike balls plus all

the spares if I don't strike.  If you can't get loose or lined up with 10 strike balls, maybe you need to

run some laps before bowling.

10 balls?! Unreal. On Saturday nights in a 5 person mixed league, I quite often get three or four shots, and that's it! It takes me more shots than that just to get my thumb to stop shrinking and swelling back and forth with every shot, so I spend half the first game fiddling with tape.

I think shadow bowling was great.  As already said, you get to throw more shots.  Also, if you have been bowling for awhile, you know when you throw a good or bad shot, you do not need pins to tell you that.  If you are looking to get lined in, all you are trying to do is read the oil pattern and you can do that by watching your ball go down the lanes from the foul line til it drops in the pit.  Watching your ball as it exits the lanes tells you a lot.

I agree with shadow bowling support...

But let me ask, If you think you struck, do you move on or if you throw your ball & miss your mark & the would be pocket, do you throw again for a spear? Or do you go to the back of the line of the next lane? With the pins is how our league practices... So I throw at the ten pin 1st sometimes, much to the chagrin of the guys waiting behind me, & then the 2nd ball I'll throw it again if I missed or throw a strike line ball...
