Shadow Bowl

 Just curious how many of you have league practice sessions WITHOUT pins.  When I lived on Long Island, I remember quite often shadow practicing.  I always preferred it that way.  It made me more conscious of my target and release, as well as getting in more shots.  Seems nobody around here does that anymore (SW VA).  Does anyone still practice this way?.  I think next year, I will bring it up during league meeting and see what kind of response and feedback there is.

I had shadow practice in junior league at an AMF house ages ago. Hated it at the time since I wanted pins to shoot at but nowadays I could handle it.

 

AMFs are the machines that will allow this practice, as you can turn on just the backend motor that controls the ball return mechanism. You might be able to just turn on the backend motor on a GS series Brunswick but you would have to set it to run all the time so the belt in the pit and ball booster will run all the time and return balls. Impossible to do on an A series Brunswick though.

bowl 2 diff houses.  house 1 computer scoring pins for practice.  house 2 manual scoring shadow practice.  live in upstate new york.

On the other hand, every single other person in my leagues needs to always have a full rack of pins and will waste precious warmup time resetting. I need to throw as many shots as I possibly can just to get warmed up, stop wasting my time!!

I agree completely. All I want to do is warm up, so I don't care if I'm shooting at spare shots or not. Being an old "shadow bowler", I believe I can line up to the pocket without shooting at a full rack anyway. In fact, I am getting back into league bowling next week (as a sub) for the first time in nearly five years and I don't know the etiquette for my league. Since it''s just a fun league without a lot of competitive bowlers, I am hoping that everyone just shoots at whatever pins are standing instead of resetting to get a full rack and slowing everyone down. For all I know, they might each shoot a full frame instead of only throwing one shot.

I found that it was my old scratch leagues where the bowlers tended to reset the pins each time to get a full rack. Funny, I would often shoot spares in practice, too (corner pins). I always thought it was a waste for me to pick off the 10-pin, then have the guy behind me reset the pins so that he could shoot at a full rack. I mean, c'mon - really?

not a bad idea for "practice"/open play.... thinks pretty dumb for the few mins you get b4 you start league or a tourny.. i say this cause some houses carry better going up the boards and some better inside lines and even some carry all over!! LOL
you would never really know unless you threw a few balls at the pins...and even then may not even know..

Before computer scoring it was always shadow bowling around here SW VA. Now they say the computers won't allow you to do it. I did bowl in a house this past weekend that swept after every ball. We had many more practice shots than we would otherwise. As far as needing pins to get lined up, not necessary. You can see the pin spots and tell if your close. Adjust from there.

That is a good point - there are houses where different lines carry much better. As part of that, I would concede that the crazy entry angles possible with today's bowling balls makes it a little harder to judge if you're on the right strike line. That being said, I would still be perfectly happy if my house decided to go all-shadow bowling for practice.
