Why Does It Take So Long ........?
« on: September 16, 2009, 02:37:42 PM »
to figure out the proper line of a pair? Last night was the first night or our mixed league at the local house. Typical house pattern with a medium amount of oil down to 38 feet, dry out side of 10 (according to the lane man).

So the first game I struggle, moving all over the place trying to find a line. I finally get back to where I started and strike out for a huge 168.

Second game 255, third game 206, using the same ball and same line.

So what happened during the first game that suddenly was different in games 2 & 3?

Nobody was burning up a line for me because I was the only bowler using my line on our pair. I sure get angry at myself for not being able to figure things out quickly. Screws up a set when it takes a whole game to figure out which line to use, how hard to throw it and how to release it.

It takes me 30 frames because I can't repeat a shot.

If there was open bowling on the pair after they oiled and before your league, they could have created carrydown with polyester or house balls. It could have taken a game to recreate a dry area that the lane machine originally created.

I assume you saw some irregular ball reaction in the first game, being an older more experienced player and it could have confused you, IF there were carrydown and there were no other decent or educated bowlers on your pair with you.

I don't know if this was the case or not. Just never assume the lanes are in pristine condition, EVEN IF you saw them oiling just before your league and especially if the house says, "but we just oiled"! Only assume what you see based on the ball reaction of a ball you know.

Yup. Had this in league several times, when the lane was even drier after being freshly made in the league's lunch break, and last Tuesday in training I started on a lane, having lots of trouble with a super dry back end (anything was literally screaming to the wrong pocket...). After 2 games I had to switch to another lane, and out of a sudden I had the ball reaction I had expected. Weird. Always expect surprises, and just trust your own experience and the ball's reaction.
